Snapshots of the Pandemic. Vulnerable Humanity in Deborah Levy’s "August Blue"
This article aims to address the apparent duality of Deborah Levy’s literary take on the COVID-19 landscape in her latest novel, August Blue (2023). It demonstrates how fragility and the crisis of humanity and of the protagonist are depicted through the lens of the global event of the pandemic. The methodology combines photography theory, with a special emphasis on Roland Barthes’s and Susan Sontag’s diagnoses, and Freudian-Lacanian psychoanalysi…
Monstrosity – Illness – Wound
Sofia Papastergiadis – the protagonist of Deborah Levy’s Hot Milk – seems to be encircled by various monstrosities. First, her overbearing, monstrous mother suffers from an equally monstrous unidentifiable illness, because of which the two women travel to Almería, seeking answers and potential therapy. Second, while in Andalusia, Sofia is often attacked by Medusae/jellyfish, which is a painful, yet uncannily addictive experience. Third, the prota…
Polish w stylu and the rise of hedges
This paper focuses on the last stage (cf. Fig.1) of the development of the lexicalised prepositional phrase w stylu (lit. in+style) in Polish. Styl ‘style, manner’ has not been widely accepted among TN (taxonomic nouns) (Danon-Boileau&Morel 1997, Denison 2002, Mihatsch 2016), and yet the development path of w stylu resembles the path of lexicalization of parallel constructions with TN. Regardless the growing interest in TN constructions, they rem…

Bezdomność i wiedza. O ranach dzieciństwa w "Płynąc do domu" Deborah Levy
