Was Heidegger an Analytic Philosopher
Casati’s book Heidegger and the Contradiction of Being (2022) is read as a valuable contribution to the enterprise of removing the residual and disturbing aspects of the old analytic-continental divide. After a presentation of what I think are the main contents of the book, I present a very brief account of Heidegger’s view, focusing on three themes that Casati tends to underrate: the overcoming of metaphysics, the hermeneutical approach to the p…
Introduction. Logic and Politics
The aim of this special issue is to explore the intersections of logic, intended as the formal science of valid consequence, and politics, the practical science of associated life. The analyses here provided deal with the theme in two ways: by considering what logic can do for politics, so proposing possible formalizations of political arguments, or using logical notions and tools to interpret political facts and problems; by considering what pol…
The Birth of Logic Out of the Spirit of Democracy
This paper advances a version of the theory whereby logic had deep origins in democracy, by re-reading Gorgias’ Encomium of Helen. Democracy, ‘the government by debate’, called political (and scientific) attention to the inferential abilities of citizens and to politicians’ ability of taking advantage of them. Sophists, in particular, discovered that people’s inferences follow constant repeatable forms, that these forms have impact on choices and…
Hegel’s Interpretation of the Sorites
Hegel’s approach to soritical arguments (as well as to paradoxes in general) can be read as a kind of conjunctive paraconsistency: the ‘explosive’ effect of contradictions is avoided by assuming ‘the unity of the opposites’, so that contradictory conjunctions are not simplifiable. The paper reconsiders what Hegel says about the Sorites and justifies the conjunctive interpretation. The first section introduces the analysis, presenting the role of …
Hegel’s Interpretation of the Liar Paradox
In his Lectures on the History of Philosophy, Hegel develops a subtle analysis of Megarian paradoxes: the Liar, the Veiled Man and the Sorites. In this paper, we focus on Hegel's interpretation of the Liar. We note that in Hegel's treatment there are positive suggestions for a new analysis of the paradox. Faced with the Liar's sentence ‘μ’ that says ‘“μ” is false’, Hegel's idea is that the conjunction ‘μ and not μ’ is to be held true, but the two…
Alethic Rights
The focus of this article is the notion of alethic rights, the rights related to truth. The concept of truth grounds many norms and customary and official rules, but there is no clear and shared idea about its power to generate specific rights. The juridical and political archetype called ‘the right to truth’ is still subject of controversies, and there are doubts about its being a real ‘right,’ to be protected by positive (new) norms. In the art…
Conjunctive paraconsistency
This article is a preliminary presentation of conjunctive paraconsistency , the claim that there might be non-explosive true contradictions, but contradictory propositions cannot be considered separately true. In case of true ‘p and not p’, the conjuncts must be held untrue, Simplification fails. The conjunctive approach is dual to non-adjunctive conceptions of inconsistency, informed by the idea that there might be cases in which a proposition i…
Misunderstandings about truth
The article explores the most common disagreements and misunderstandings concerning truth, in philosophical as well as extra-philosophical debates, then reflects on the notion of “post-truth era”, reverting the diagnosis, and suggesting that in the recent history of the concept of truth we may find some positive opportunities that deserve to be taken into account
