  • Fallacies in the Arabic, Byzantine, Hebrew and Latin Traditions

Leone Gazziero, Laurent Cesalli et al.•BOOK•Fallacies in the Arabic,…•2023

Fallacy studies are a well established and fast expanding field of argumentation theory. Without notable exception, however, the evergrowing literature on argumentative failure suffers from a conspicuous lack of interest in medieval fallacy theory - arguably the most creative stage in the whole history of argumentation theories. The standard story is that after Aristotle got off to a tentative start, the study of fallacies lay dormant until peopl…

  • In Existence and in Nonexistence: Types, Tokens, and the Analysis of Dawarān as a Test for Causation

Open Access•Shahid Rahman, Walter Edward Young•ARTICLE•Méthodos•2022

Qiyās, or “correlational inference” (often glossed as “analogy”), comprises a primary set of methodological tools recognized by a majority of premodern Sunnī jurists. Its elements, valid modes, and proper applications were the focus of continual argument and refinement. A particular area of debate was the methodology of determining or justifying the ʿilla: the legal cause (or occasioning factor, or ratio legis) giving rise to a ruling in God’s La…

  • Argumentation and Arabic Philosophy of Language: Introduction

Open Access•Shahid Rahman, Walter Edward Young•ARTICLE•Méthodos•2022

The domain of Islamic thought and intellectual history boasts an important body of studies relevant to the Arabic philosophy of language, as well as a growing interest in Islamicate argumentation theory and practice. There remains, however, a dearth of volumes which pool research from both areas and examine them together. Filling this gap is more critical than ever. In our time, significant work is being conducted in argumentation theory, but lit…

  • Dialectic, the Dictum de Omni and Ecthesis

Michel Crubellier, Manier Marion et al.•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2019

In this paper, we provide a detailed critical review of current approaches to ecthesis in Aristotle’s Prior Analytics, with a view to motivate a new approach, which builds upon previous work by Marion & Rückert (2016) on the dictum de omni. This approach sets Aristotle’s work within the context of dialectic and uses Lorenzen’s dialogical logic, hereby reframed with use of Martin-Löf's constructive type theory as ‘immanent reasoning’. We then prov…

  • Inferences by Parallel Reasoning in Islamic Jurisprudence: Al-Shīrāzī’s Insights into the Dialectical Constitution of Meaning and Knowledge

  • Unfolding Parallel Reasoning in Islamic Jurisprudence: Epistemic and Dialectical Meaning in Abū Isḥāq al-Shīrāzī’s System of Co-Relational Inferences of the Occasioning Factor

Shahid Rahman, Muhammad Iqbal•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•2018

One of the epistemological results emerging from this initial study is that the different forms of co-relational inference , known in the Islamic jurisprudence as qiyās , represent an innovative and sophisticated form of reasoning that not only provides new epistemological insights into legal reasoning in general but also furnishes a fine-grained pattern for parallel reasoning which can be deployed in a wide range of problem-solving contexts and …

  • Ibn Sīnā’s Approach to Equality and Unity

Open Access•Shahid Rahman, Johan Georg Granström et al.•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•2014

Aristotle did not develop the quantification of the predicate, but, as shown in a recent paper by Hasnawi, Ibn Sīnā did. In fact, assuming the Aristotelian subject-predicate structure, Ibn Sīnā qualifies those propositions that carry a quantified predicate as deviating ( muḥarrafa ) propositions. A consequence of Ibn Sīnā’s approach is that the second quantification is absorbed by the predicate term. The clear differentiation between a quantified…
