Effects of Exogenous Auxin (IBA or NAA) and Combined Auxin-BA Dipping Treatments on Propagation Performance, Development, and Physiological Responses of Philodendron hederaceum Schott Stem Cuttings
Background and objective: Philodendron hederaceum Schott is a widely cultivated ornamental foliage plant that is commonly propagated by stem cuttings; however, uneven rooting and establishment, along with variability in early growth, can reduce production uniformity. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of exogenous auxin (indole-3-butyric acid; IBA or 1- naphthaleneacetic acid; NAA) dipping, applied either alone or in combination with a low …
Light Spectrum Strategies to Optimize Yield and Physiological Performance of Korean Thistle ( Cirsium setidens (Dunn) Nakai) in a Closed-type Plant Production System
Background and objective: In closed-type plant production systems, controlling the spectral distribution of light strongly influences plant morphophysiological traits. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the growth, yield, plant quality, chlorophyll fluorescence, and remote sensing vegetation indices of Korean thistle (Cirsium setidens (Dunn) Nakai) exposed to different light qualities with the aim of identifying spectral conditions…
Dry-cold Stratification Combined with Pericarp Removal
Background and objective: Lilyturf (Liriope muscari (Decne.) L.H. Bailey) is a perennial herbaceous plant of high medicinal and horticultural value. However, its seeds are characterized by thick pericarp and fleshy pulp, which are associated with low germination rates and poor seedling establishment. This study was conducted to examine the combined effects of pericarp removal and dry-cold stratification periods on germination, seedling developmen…
Supporting teachers through curriculum-based professional learning
Background The shifts called for in recent reform efforts require new roles for students and teachers that reposition the intellectual authority in the classroom. To support these changes, most teachers need to alter the way they teach and require professional learning. Methods We used a case study approach to investigate 30 science teachers’ instructional vision of science during a four-day curriculum-based professional learning workshop. We coll…
Effects of Different Concentrations of Exogenous Auxins (IAA, IBA, and NAA) on Growth and Rooting Ability of Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium (Schott) Croat Stem Cuttings
Background and objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different types and concentrations of exogenous auxins on growth and rooting ability of Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium stem cuttings. Methods: Auxins used included indole acetic acid (IAA) at concentrations of 80, 160, and 320 mg⋅L-1, and 3-indolebutyric acid (IBA) and 1-naphthylacetic acid (NAA) at concentrations of 250, 500, and 1000 mg⋅L-1, respectively. Results: T…
Collective Actions, Individual Reasons, and the Metaphysics of Consequence
I defend the view that individual agents have instrumental moral reasons for and against contributing to collective actions. I distinguish three versions of this view found in the literature and argue that only one withstands scrutiny: the version on which each individual contribution to a collective action is a cause of the latter’s large-scale outcomes. The central difficulty with this view is its apparent incompatibility with leading theories …
Building low level causation out of high level causation
Living Out Being a Public Church in Selma, Alabama
Contemporary missions, regardless of the sending country, often include socio-economic dimensions. One application of the socio-economic aspect is Entrepreneurial Church Planting which uses business entrepreneurs and clergy members to launch spiritually and economically integrated communities of faith. In a world that measures success economically, how should be success being measured in such endeavours? For too long in the history of the Christi…
Violence and Entry in Prostitution Markets
This chapter explores three issues in prostitution markets and their implications for prostitution law: bargaining, coercion, and entry. The discussion is organized around three different views on violence: prostitution as a product of violence, voluntary entry into prostitution markets, and transactional coercion. The chapter pays special attention to transactional coercion, which acknowledges the fact that violence against prostitutes is not re…
The Travels of Ibn Batūta
This English edition of the work of the Arab traveller usually known as Ibn Battuta (1304–68/9) was translated by Rev. Samuel Lee (1783–1852), Professor of Arabic in the University of Cambridge, from 'the abridged Arabic manuscript copies, preserved in the Public Library of Cambridge', and published in 1829. Lee's work sparked widespread European interest in Ibn Battuta, who had set off from his native Morocco on a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1325, an…
Pastoral Bearings
Pastoral Bearings signifies a culmination of major shifts in the field of pastoral theology in a number of ways. First, religious practice is no longer viewed as the prerogative of the religious community or its officially sanctioned leaders alone, whose interest may be the maintenance of a set of ideological tenets. Religious practice is now viewed as a complex set of lived experience by which the participating persons in it exercise their agenc…
