The Hole Argument and Putnam’s Paradox
We discuss affinities and differences between (i) the hole argument in general relativity and (ii) Putnam’s model-theoretic argument against metaphysical realism (‘Putnam’s paradox’). Following Pooley (The Reality of Spacetime, University of Oxford, 2002), we maintain that the hole argument is not a special case of Putnam’s paradox. This notwithstanding, both of these arguments have been responded to through meta-linguistic means. While van Fraas…
A guide to selecting psychological interventions that can be delivered by people who are not mental health specialists in low-resource settings
Globally, most individuals with mental health conditions lack access to specialized care. One strategy to bridge this gap is training people who are not mental health professionals (non-specialists) to deliver brief, manualized psychological interventions, which have demonstrated effectiveness across diverse settings. However, selecting the most suitable intervention for specific populations, contexts, and psychological needs in low-resource sett…
Experiences and impact of Duelo Migratorio among Venezuelan refugees and migrants in Peru
Duelo Migratorio is a salient psychosocial experience faced by refugees and migrants that is not explicitly captured by existing frameworks. Future research ought to explore Duelo Migratorio in additional populations and explore how MHPSS interventions can alleviate cultural constructs of distress
Task Sharing and Remote Delivery of Brief Interpersonal Counseling for Venezuelan Migrants and Refugees Living in Peru during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Refugees and migrants experience an elevated risk for mental health problems and face significant barriers to receiving services. Interpersonal counseling (IPC-3) is a three-session intervention that can be delivered by non-specialists to provide psychological support and facilitate referrals for individuals in need of specialized care. We piloted IPC-3 delivered remotely by eight Venezuelan refugee and migrant women living in Peru. These counsel…
Euclidean spacetime functionalism
We explore the significance of physical theories set in Euclidean spacetimes (i.e., theories with Riemannian rather than pseudo-Riemannian metrical structure). In particular, we explore (a) the use of these theories in contemporary physics at large, and (b) the sense in which there can be a notion of temporal evolution in these theories. Having achieved these tasks, we proceed to reflect on the lessons that one can take from such theories for Kno…
Global Mental Health and Nutrition
Both malnutrition and poor mental health are leading sources of global mortality, disease, and disability. The fields of global food security and nutrition (FSN) and mental health have historically been seen as separate fields of research. Each have undergone substantial transformation, especially from clinical, primary care orientations to wider, sociopolitical approaches to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. In recent years, the trajectorie…
Food insecurity, mental distress and suicidal ideation in rural Africa
BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, mental and substance-related disorders account for 19% of all years lived with disability, yet the intersection between poverty and mental distress is poorly understood since most psychiatric research is conducted in high-income countries. AIMS: To examine the prevalence of and associations between food insecurity, mental distress and suicidal ideation in three rural village clusters in sub-Saharan Africa. METHO…
