  • Conceptual spaces

    Open Access•Sylka Scholz, Gottfried Vosgerau•ARTICLE•Synthese•2025•References: 35

The conceptual spaces framework posits that conceptual content is structured geometrically, and is equipped with cognitive criteria of naturalness (namely, convexity and principles of cognitive economy). Its proponents suggest that cognitive naturalness is naturalness simpliciter, a novel move in a debate that is traditionally focused on how the world, and not the mind, is structured. We argue that “cognitive naturalness” is a misnomer and that t…

  • Critical Note

Arne M Weber, Gottfried Vosgerau•CHAPTER•The Oxford Handbook of 4E Cognition•2018

While Gallagher, Pacherie, Rowlands, and de Vignemont focus on various aspects of a coupling between brain, body, and environment, they want to explain different cognitive and especially perceptual phenomena. Subsequently, we ask in detail for their explanatory aims regarding the specific explananda and the plausibility of each explanans. Thereby, a comparison of given accounts requires a closer evaluation concerning the possible scope of influen…

  • Vehicles, contents and supervenience

    Open Access•Gottfried Vosgerau•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2018•References: 2

In this paper, I provide an argument for the assumption that contents supervene on vehicles, which is based on the explanatory role of representations in the cognitive sciences. I then show that the supervenience thesis together with the explanatory role imply that the individuation criteria for contents and vehicles are tightly bound together, such that content internalism (externalism) is in effect equivalent to vehicle internalism (externalism…

  • The experience of agency

Open Access•Matthis Synofzik, Gottfried Vosgerau et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychology•2013

The experience of agency, i.e., the registration that I am the initiator of my actions, is a basic and constant underpinning of our interaction with the world. Whereas several accounts have underlined predictive processes as the central mechanism (e.g., the comparator model by C. Frith), others emphasized postdictive inferences (e.g., post-hoc inference account by D. Wegner). Based on increasing evidence that both predictive and postdictive proce…
