Romania’s immigration debate under neoliberal hegemony
In 2020, a group of residents of the rural Transylvanian Hungarian-majority municipality of Ditró (in Hungarian), or Ditrău (in Romanian), mobilised themselves against two Sri Lankan bakers. Mainstream media portrayed the incident as xenophobic and racist, the locals as right-wing extremists, and the Sri Lankans as merely ‘migrant workers’, turning the ‘Ditrău incident’ into Romania’s first and most important nationwide immigration debate. This a…
Minority Education in Central and Eastern Europe. Toward a Framework for Comparative Analysis and Minority Rights Advocacy
We outline a framework for comparative analyses of minority education and present four illustrative Central and Eastern European (CEE) cases: Bulgaria, Estonia, the Republic of North Macedonia and Romania. The fourfold typology we develop relies on literature on minority rights and diversity management and proposes a holistic approach, differing from narrower legal analysis. We investigate education as part of larger macro-approaches of minority …
Intercultural Communication
Intercultural communication is an important area of study, especially in the 21st century when contact between different cultures, due to globalization and the development of information technology, has increased to levels never seen before. This entry starts with a discussion of the two building elements of the construct (communication and culture) and argues that both of these are complex and changing. Thus, they can be conceptualized as comple…
Kin-State Intervention and the Securitization-Minority Policy Nexus
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, launched under the pretext of protecting the rights of Russian kin populations outside of Russia, had a massive impact on security concerns beyond Ukraine. An important consequence was the intensification of insecurities about the presence of large Russian-speaking minorities in Russia’s neighboring states. Scholars have long emphasized that kin-state involvement can lead to the securitization of m…
Inherent Attitudes or Misplaced Policies? Explaining Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in Romania
Hesitancy toward COVID-19 vaccines was not particularly high in Romania at the beginning of the vaccination campaign. Nevertheless, the country became one of the laggards in the European Union in terms of vaccination rates. We provide an empirical explanation for this phenomenon based on a representative survey conducted in November–December 2021. We test the influence of various factors on vaccine hesitancy, such as personal experiences with the…
Modelling Okun’s law
In this paper, we analyse Okun’s law—a relation between the change in the unemployment rate and GDP growth—using data from Australia, the euro area, the UK and the USA. More specifically, we assess the relevance of non-Gaussianity when modelling the relation. This is done in a Bayesian VAR framework with stochastic volatility where we allow the different models’ error distributions to have heavier-than-Gaussian tails and skewness. Our results ind…
A Network Analysis of L2 Motivational Factors
Motivational factors have long attracted the attention of researchers and educators with their potential to shed light on what drives effective language learning. Although current research now views language learning motivation as a Complex Dynamic System (CDS), there is a dearth of empirical studies utilizing network analysis to understand how motivational systems operate. This exploratory study investigated the structure and connectivity of a s…
Long‐run predictability tests are even worse than you thought
We derive asymptotic results for the long‐horizon ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator and corresponding ‐statistic for stationary autoregressive predictors. The ‐statistic—formed using the correct asymptotic variance—together with standard‐normal critical values result in a correctly‐sized test for exogenous predictors. For endogenous predictors, the test is size distorted regardless of the persistence in the predictor and adjusted critical va…

Populism on the Semi-Periphery
The article analyzes why and how anti-corruption has become a quasi-hegemonic metanarrative and identity marker of urban middle classes in Romania, and argues that it is part of a complex identity discourse that is in essence populist. It pits “the People” against the elites, it displays an exclusionary character, and the hostility toward elected institutions is also present. While scholarly accounts rarely associate Romanian anti-corruption disc…
Towards a non‐dichotomous view of motivators and demotivators in language learning
This study explores the motivational dynamics and motivational factors of 60 first‐year English for Academic Purposes learners. Data were collected over a 10‐week period by means of motivation journals and focus group discussions. The findings indicate that students’ motivation levels changed frequently from day to day and that motivational factors can serve as both motivators and demotivators as their strength and polarity change according to in…
Connecting Multiliteracies and Writing Pedagogy for 21st Century English Language Classrooms
Background and Purpose: Given the dynamic, global and multimodal character of English in the 21st century, it should be reasonable to expect English language (EL) teaching to accommodate the influences of media and technology on modern communication practices. In Singapore, education policy therefore highlights multiliteracies as one of three foci for the EL classroom. Yet, scant attention has been paid in research and practice to the impact of t…
Revisiting the Pedagogy of Multiliteracies
Given the multimodal and multicultural character of modern English, English Language Teaching should meaningfully reflect this. Although some attempts have been made, adequate attention has not been paid to reforming writing pedagogy. This paper presents the findings of a two-year research project on writing instruction in the Singapore English Language classroom, which caters for a mixture of EFL (English as a foreign language), L2 (second langu…
Beyond the Ethnic Vote
This study investigates the determinants of electoral behavior in the context of ethnic bloc voting through exploring the case of Hungarians in Transylvania. There is a remarkable lack of systematic micro-level analyses of the electoral behavior of this minority group. The study discusses the impact of both expressive and instrumental motivations on the voting behavior. The article contributes to the literature of this field in two ways. First, i…
Escaping the “Balkanizing” Gaze? Perceptions of Global and Internal Developmental Hierarchies in Romania
The article presents the perceptions of global and internal developmental hierarchies in Romania. According to our empirical results, the Western-centred developmental paradigm has deeply penetrated the worldviews of ordinary people in Romania. As a consequence, national self-perceptions, respectively, constructions of internal regional and ethnic differences in Romania, are powerfully shaped by the idea of East–West developmental hierarchies. Me…
School-Based Teacher Learning
Professional development is an important issue for every teacher. The recent trends in education favour teacher-centred, participant initiated and managed, school-based teacher development programmes, for example action research, lesson study, communities of practice, etc. Although there is no doubt that such initiatives offer ample learning opportunities for practitioners, it is important that higher level school or institutional development str…
The perception of global hierarchies
In this paper we examine the views of ordinary people in Hungary and Romania about developmental trajectories and developmental hierarchies. Our work extends research on perception of global hierarchies as we include the views of ordinary people in the countries of Hungary and Romania. In addition, our research makes a unique contribution to the development and developmental hierarchy literature by examining, for the first time, how individuals d…
Shifting linkages in ethnic mobilization
The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) has been the most stable actor in the Romanian party system over the past two decades. However, in this article, we argue that beyond this apparent stability, the linkages between RMDSZ and its voters have undergone a gradual, yet significant shift. The ethnic block voting of Transylvanian Hungarians was closely connected to the concept of a self-standing and parallel “Minority Society,” an…
Culture in English as a Foreign Language ( EFL ) Textbooks
This article problematizes current, quantitative approaches to the analysis of culture in foreign language textbooks as objectifying culture, and offers an alternative, semiotic framework that examines texts, images, and tasks as merely engendering particular meanings in the act of semiosis. The authors take as a point of departure developments within the social sciences that have questioned monolithic conceptualizations of culture as well as rec…
Role of Thalamic Projection in NMDA Receptor-Induced Disruption of Cortical Slow Oscillation and Short-Term Plasticity
NMDA receptor (NMDAR) antagonists, such as phencyclidine, ketamine, or dizocilpine (MK-801) are commonly used in psychiatric drug discovery in order to model several symptoms of schizophrenia, including psychosis and impairments in working memory. In spite of the widespread use of NMDAR antagonists in preclinical and clinical studies, our understanding of the mode of action of these drugs on brain circuits and neuronal networks is still limited. …
