  • The breakdown of co-teaching

    Ian Moodie, Sung‐Yeon Kim•ARTICLE•Teachers and Teaching•2026

In order to improve the efficacy of public school English education, numerous countries in East Asia have developed co-teaching programmes that pair local English teachers (LETs) and native English-speaking teachers (NESTs). However, research has consistently unveiled challenges for collaboration between co-teachers. Thus, the aim of this study is to qualitatively examine the sources of breakdowns in co-teaching across various school levels. Data…

  • The Unfolding of Careers

    Open Access•Ian Moodie, Vincent Greenier•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•2026•References: 29

Teacher attrition negatively impacts teachers, learners, schools, and educational systems. However, language teacher attrition research remains scant compared to general education studies, particularly so with expatriate TESOL professionals. Thus, the purpose of this study is to analyze and interpret why expatriate language teachers leave the field of TESOL. Using the unfolding model of voluntary turnover, a well‐established model from organizati…

  • Occupational commitment and turnover intentions among expatriate English teachers in Asia

    Open Access•Ian Moodie•ARTICLE•Language Teaching•2025•References: 19

To better understand language teacher turnover, this study closely replicates and extends McInerney et al.’s (2015) research, which found that teacher commitment predicted turnover intentions to schools (44.2%) and the profession (45.2%) among Hong Kong schoolteachers ( N = 1,060). Given the relatively stable employment conditions in that context, the generalizability of these findings to more mobile populations, such as expatriate native English…

  • I Promised Growing up I Would Not Become a Teacher”

    Open Access•Ian Moodie, Vincent Greenier•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 30

Despite some research attention given to expatriate native‐English‐speaking teachers' (NESTs) identities and the national educational ideologies that have led to their international recruitment, surprisingly little research has addressed their career trajectories as TESOL professionals. To address this gap, this case study explores the career of a long‐serving expatriate TESOL professional through the lens of Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT)…

  • Yasemin Tezgiden-Cakcak

    Open Access•Ian Moodie•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2022

In this book, the author revisits her PhD research, making the case that English-language teacher education in Turkey suffers largely from technicism, which is a belief that having teachers learn instructional methods and techniques alone is enough to ‘fix all educational problems’ (p. 23). To overcome this issue, Tezgiden-Cakcak prescribes critical pedagogy, calling for a more ‘critical, democratic, and humanizing approach to teacher preparation…

  • Donald Freeman

    Ian Moodie•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2017

This book, as the author states, articulates a career-long interest in understanding ‘how people who teach second languages use what they know to do what they do in the classroom’ (p. xi). The main contribution of the book is Freeman’s design theory of second language teacher education (SLTE), which revisits his earlier ideas of language teacher learning (Freeman 1993), articulating the process trainees go through in renaming their experiences to…

  • English language teaching research in South Korea

Open Access•Ian Moodie, Hyunjeong Nam et al.•ARTICLE•Language Teaching•2016

This article reviews recent studies on English language teaching (ELT) in South Korea, where a great deal of research has been produced in recent years in local journals. In this article we review 95 studies from a pool of some 1,200 published between 2009 and 2014 on English language teaching and learning, focusing on research within the public school context. Using themes from the national curriculum as an organizing principle, the review cover…
