Designing and Conducting Quantitative Methods Studies
Despite the rise of qualitative methods in the last few decades, the quantitative research method (QRM) remains the most commonly practiced way of inquiry in both education and applied linguistics. The unique characteristics of QRM such as selecting random samples, having at least two groups of experimental and comparison, offering systematic treatment to the experimental and a placebo to the comparison group, administering a pretest and posttest…
Hatch, Evelyn
Evelyn Hatch (b. 1929) is Professor Emerita at UCLA Department of TESL/Applied Linguistics. She began her studies at UCLA in the 1960s, completing, in fairly rapid succession, a BA in political science, an MA in linguistics, and a PhD in education. This broad academic background reflects Hatch's diverse interests in her career in applied linguistics. In addition to being an exceptional teacher, Hatch has been a leader in several areas, especially…

Quantitative Methods
Debates in applied linguistics about quantitative research methods (QRM) over the past few decades have contributed to sharpening an understanding of the use of QRM in the field. QRM remains one of the most widely practiced approaches in social sciences in general, and in applied linguistics in particular. This entry explains the major features of QRM in as nontechnical terms as possible, beginning with the classic definition of the term “researc…
Quantitative Methods
There has been a plethora of ongoing debates in the field of applied linguistics on many aspects of quantitative research method (QRM) in the last few decades.
Language Assessment Policy in Iran
Despite its geopolitical reputation, Iran has been quite underrepresented in studies of its sociopolitically dominated religious educational framework and its language teaching and assessment policy. In the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, major restructuring was planned for foreign language teaching and assessment to accord with Islamic values. However, due to political obstacles, including the long-lasting war between Iran and Iraq,…
A text-driven method for the deletion procedure in cloze passages
This article proposes a text-driven method for the deletion procedure in cloze passages. Contrary to the previous methods, the deletion rate suggested in this study is based on the number of the linguistic and discourse structures of a passage. After determining the proficiency level of the subjects, a passage of appropriate length and difficulty with the deletion rate of 7 was developed. Along with this standard cloze, eight different versions w…

Measures of Language Proficiency from the Learner's Perspective
This paper examines the importance of learner characteristics in relationship to learner performance on ESL tests. It is argued here that test taker characteristics are not included in the design of most ESL tests. Empirical evidence is provided to support the hypothesis that performance on various ESL tests is closely related to test takers' educational and language backgrounds. It is also argued that in order to account for these factors, and t…
The Disjunctive Fallacy between Discrete-Point and Integrative Tests
This article presents evidence of underlying similarities between discretepoint and integrative tests and questions the validity of special claims for distinguishing one from the other. The procedures followed are 1) to give a brief historical account of the development of the tests in question, 2) to present statistical evidence for the similarities between the two types of tests, 3) to discuss the potential variables which may influence test re…
