Decomposition in early stages of learning novel morphologically derived words: The impact of linear vs. non-linear structure
Canadian-born trilingual children’s narrative skills in their heritage language and Canada’s official languages
This study examines the narrative production of 12 trilingual children aged 8;7–11;10 in three languages: heritage Romanian as a first language, mainstream English as a second, and school French as a third. Narrative macrostructure was analyzed via the Narrative Structure Scheme, while microstructure was assessed via story length, lexical diversity, and subordination index. An additional microstructural measure was Guiraud’s index of lexical rich…
The Interplay Between Working Memory and Background Knowledge in L2 Reading Comprehension
Despite the known roles of working memory and background knowledge in the process of reading comprehension, few attempts have been made to elucidate the interaction between these two individual difference factors in second language (L2) reading comprehension. The current study investigated whether and how working memory and background knowledge combine to facilitate L2 reading comprehension in a context where L2 students encounter texts with and …
Morphological awareness as a function of semantics, phonology, and orthography and as a predictor of reading comprehension in Chinese
This study investigates the contributions of semantic, phonological, and orthographic factors to morphological awareness of 413 Chinese-speaking students in Grades 2, 4, and 6, and its relationship with reading comprehension. Participants were orally presented with pairs of bimorphemic compounds and asked to judge whether the first morphemes of the words shared a meaning. Morpheme identity (same or different), whole-word semantic relatedness (hig…
Comparing Two Independent Groups
This entry deals with research designs in applied linguistics in which two independent groups of participants are compared. First, the concept of independent groups is defined and contrasted with other designs. Then, a number of essential research and statistical terms related to studies involving two independent groups are elaborated on. Finally, appropriate statistical procedures for analyzing data from such research designs are described, and …
Serbo-Croatian: The making and breaking of an Ausbausprache
Utilizing Kloss’s concept of Ausbausprache (language as a sociopolitical construct), this article adopts the view that many languages in the world owe their language status to non-linguistic factors such as their speakers’ ethnic, cultural, and political affiliations, as well as language policy. It is thus possible that individuals who can readily understand each other in everyday conversation (such as two individuals living on either side of the…
