A number of studies in the previous decades have discussed the perceptions and evaluations of Islam by Europeans, from the Middle Ages till modern times, occasionally focusing on the Qur’ān. How the Islamic holy text w…

The Qur'an of Johann Zechendorff
This article focuses on features and peculiarities of the Arabic text of Sūrat al-Kahf in Zechendorff's newly discovered Qur'an manuscript. Zechendorff's work is the result of his efforts to produce a faithful copy of a Muslim Qur'an manuscript, including the text and all the signs such as vocalisation and aids for recitation. On the whole, the sample analysed shows that he carried his work out with care, although some problems with the Qur'an's …

The Latin Translation of the Qurʾān by Johann Zechendorff (1580-1662) Discovered in Cairo Dār al-Kutub
The manuscript Maṣāḥif 198 of Cairo Dār al-kutub preserves an interlinear Latin translation of the Qurʾān. It is the work by Johann Zechendorff (1580-1662) who made it in the first half of the seventeenth century but could not find a publisher for it. Handwriting and further information from his published booklets on the Qurʾān confirm this. Zechendorff copied the Qurʾānic text from a manuscript of the Qurʾān he had acquired and produced an Arabi…

Origin and Use of the Term Isrā'īiyyāt in Muslim Literature
Muslim Traditions Against Secular Prostration and Inter-Religious Polemic
Muslim tradition forbids the prostration before men (secular prostration). The utterances of the Prophet Muhammad highlight this prohibition, contrasting it to the customs in use among Christians and Jews in the regions surrounding the peninsula. This precept is not stated in the Qur ̧ān where, instead, the cases of the prostration of Joseph before his father and of Adam before the angels arc mentioned. After the advent of Islam, Christian and Je…
The Qiṣaṣ al-anbiyā’ of Ibn Muṭarrif al-Ṭarafī (d. 454/1062)
Muslim Attitudes Towards Prostration (sujud)
The thanksgiving prostration (sujūd al-shukr) in Muslim traditions
Prostration (sujūd) is a fundamental part of the ritual prayer (ṣalāt). It is the highest form of religious devotion and is often mentioned in the Quran as well as in many traditions from all genres of Muslim literature. Prostration is also mentioned in some traditions in relation to what Muslim sources define as sujūd al-shukr, i.e., literally, 'the thanksgiving prostration'. This is a voluntary act of devotion consisting of a prostration perfor…
