Statistical Analysis of Test Results
Statistical analysis of test results provides information to test developers and users that can be used as evidence to build an overall validity argument which supports links between the observations of performance on language tests to score interpretations, and score‐based decisions (Kane, 1992, 2006; Xi, 2008).
Bachman, Lyle F.
Lyle Bachman has been one of the leading theorists in the field of language testing for the last three decades. He was born in Iowa, USA, in 1944 and received his BA, MA, and PhD (1971) in English, all from Indiana University. Although his PhD was in English literature, his dissertation was in second language acquisition, and was based on research he conducted with schoolchildren learning English in Thailand. After completing his PhD, he went to …
Mapping the fluctuating effect of strategy use ability on English reading performance for nursing students
An essential hypothesis of modern language assessment theory pertains to the interaction between strategy use ability (strategic competence) and second language knowledge. However, how they interact with each other is rarely explored. Drawing on relevant research in the literature, in this paper we proposed three interaction patterns (i.e., linear, quadratic, and cuboid) in which language knowledge moderates the effect of strategy use ability on …
High‐Stakes Language Testing
Whether a test is considered high stakes or not depends not on the testing instrument per se but whether the test is used as the main basis for decision making for a major career path or life changing event.

Politics and Legislation in Citizenship Testing in the United States
Politics and legislation have been entangled in language planning and policy in the United States since 1776. Regulations for immigration and citizenship (naturalization) have been in place since the Naturalization Act of 1790. This article examines the history of immigration and citizenship legislation that started with this act up to the more recent act of 1952, which included regulations requiring ability in English language and knowledge of h…
Recent Developments in Language Testing
In an earlier review for the Annual Review of Applied Linguistics , Douglas (1995) wrote, “the year 1990 represented a watershed in language testing” (p. 167). This decade, though by no means over, has taken the field even further in terms of theoretical and practical developments. A few examples should illustrate this point: For test theoreticians and researchers, models of communicative language ability have challenged the traditional skills–an…
An introduction to structural equation modelling for language assessment research
This article provides an introduction to structural equation modelling (SEM) for language assessment research in five sections. In Section I, the general objectives of SEM applications relevant to language assessment are presented. In Section II, a brief overview of SEM that considers the methodology and the statistical assumptions about data that have to be met. In Section III, the commonly used steps and concepts in SEM are presented. In Sectio…
Modelling relationships among some test-taker characteristics and performance on EFL tests
Construct validation has seen two proposals recently: the use of construct representation and nomothetic span variables through structural modelling and the concept of population generalizability. This study investigated the influence of two major test-taker characteristics (TTCs), social milieu or cultural background and exposure or previous instruction, on test perform ance (TP) in tests of English as a foreign language (EFL) for two native lan…

An investigation of a criterion- referenced test using G-theory, and factor and cluster analyses
There has been relatively little research on analytical procedures for examin ing the dependability and validity of criterion-referenced tests especially when compared to similar investigations for norm-referenced ESL or EFL tests. This study used three analytical procedures, namely, G-theory, factor and cluster analyses, to investigate the dependability and validity of a criterion-referenced test developed at the University of California, Los An…
DIF in Native Language and Gender Groups in an ESL Placement Test
U The relative cultural fairness of educational tests has been a fertile field for researchers. The primary concern of such studies has been tests or test items that behave differently for different native-language, cultural, ethnic, and/or gender groups. These studies are popularly known as test bias studies but the term test bias is misleading and inaccurate. The term assumes that the researcher is examining tests or test items that are biased …

Task and ability analysis as a basis for examining content and construct comparability in two EFL proficiency test batteries
This paper describes the content analysis undertaken as part of the Cambridge- TOEFL comparability study, the purpose of which is to examine the compara bility of two EFL test batteries
