  • A Sin against Humanity and God

Michel Andraos, Jane Barter•ARTICLE•Toronto Journal of Theology•2024

[Figure: see text] At its annual meeting in June 2024, the members of the Canadian Theological Society passed a motion of solidarity with Palestinians and student protesters in encampments at universities around the globe. 1 The statement lamented the loss of over 40,000 lives in Palestine (at time of writing), including 15,000 children; condemned the scholasticide in Gaza; and articulated our condolences and solidarity with those students and fa…

  • God Keep Our Land? Unsettling Christian Theology

    Jane Barter•ARTICLE•Toronto Journal of Theology•2022

Jamaican novelist and critic Sylvia Wynter famously wrote that “the central mechanism at work” in processes of colonization “was and is that of representation.” Canadian theology is becoming ever more responsive to Wynter’s call as it thinks through the manner in which the mechanism of theological representation supported and continues to support colonization. This is the challenge that I, too, wish to take up, and I will do so through thinking a…

  • When Sorry is Not Good Enough

    Jane Barter•ARTICLE•Modern Believing•2021

This paper argues that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in Canada was marked by several key theological assumptions and that it specifically retained a decidedly christological understanding of reconciliation. In the place of Christ as agent and medium of reconciliation stood the nation of Canada, which sought to bring together indigenous and non-indigenous parties under its sovereign control. Further, through the mechanism of the Go…

  • Getting Paid and Paying Attention

Jane Barter, David Driedger•ARTICLE•Religious Studies and Theology•2021

This essay explores some of the theological and economic presuppositions at work in the advocacy for Universal or Guaranteed Basic Income arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. This is not to undermine the movement toward basic income, but to use this development – including the churches’ involvement therein – as a starting point to ask certain theological questions about the way in which this intervention has been configured in neoliberal capitalis…

  • On Not Escaping Yourself

Jane Barter•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Popular…•2016

In this article, I explore the seven seasons of Mad Men for its religious content with special attention given to how Judaism is a constant undercurrent throughout the show. In particular, Matthew Weiner's exploration of memory and time draws on several Jewish theological themes that challenge linear and progressive notions of time's passing. The constellation of past, present, and future is most fully displayed in the hero of Mad Men, Don Draper…
