What is it like to be affirmed? Micro-affirmations as a practice of academic generosity
Against the backdrop of neoliberal reforms and increasing vulnerability in higher education, we argue that microaffirmations, as a form of corporeal generosity, have a subversive potential and as such may contribute to a much-needed renaissance in academia. In this paper, we offer an empirically-grounded investigation of the experience of being affirmed through practices of what we call “collegial generosity.” Through highly sensitive micro-pheno…
The home as a normative space
This paper contributes to the emerging literature on post-pandemic ‘new normals’. We explore the cognitive and emotional mental load of housework and care labour, and how it impacts the ability to do work remotely from home. The mental load, as outlined by Dean et al. (2021), is a manifestation of internalized gender norms and plays a crucial role in shaping agency, as it determines what people feel they can (or should) prioritize and demand. We …

Non-human policy worlds
Academia is increasingly populated but remains saturated with problems of exclusion, inequality, and injustice. However, policies aimed to govern the sector are criticized for corrupting the core of the academic practice, overlooking complexities, and perpetuating old and constructing new forms of inequalities. We thus need more empowering ways to design policies which can productively transform academia into good spaces to inhabit. To this end, we …
Feminist solidarity
Feminist solidarity is a way of being that is embedded in cultural traditions and movements that resist women's socio-economic inequalities and patriarchal power. It unites women in, inter alia, a refusal to accept the ongoing prevalence of sexism and misogyny; the exploitation of women's labor, emotions, and bodies; physical and financial violence toward women; inequalities of work opportunities and entrenched gender pay disparities. Feminist so…
The Performativity of Choice
A strong emphasis on individual choice is considered to represent a particular neoliberal culture, and choice is claimed to substitute feminism. This article argues that the vocabulary of choice should not be seen only as a representation of a double entanglement of neoliberalism and postfeminism, but rather as a site for entanglement, and further explored as a performative concept. The argument is developed though empirical analysis of media tex…
