  • The Pastoralised Imam

    Open Access•Olav Elgvin•ARTICLE•Religions•2026

In the research on Islam in Europe, the concept of ‘churchification’ has at times been used to refer to the transformation of mosques and Islamic organisations in the European context. Scholarship has often focused on the structural and institutional dimensions of change in Muslim communities, but less on the transformation of religious leadership. This article adds to this literature by examining how imams in Norway engage in counselling for you…

  • Respectability, resistance or refuge? How Muslim elites in Norway respond to domination

    Open Access•Olav Elgvin•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2026

Recent work in the sociology of minorities has explored how the concept of respectability politics might be used for casting light on Muslim elites in Europe. Originating in the research on Black social movements in the US, the argument has been that elites from minority groups will often attempt to appear non-controversial and non-threatening, so that they can get acceptance from society at large. Other studies from recent years, however, have i…

  • From Transmitting Authority to Quiet Adaptation

Open Access•Olav Elgvin•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Law and Religion•2023

This article explores the transmission of textual Islamic knowledge in Norway—a context in which Muslims form a religious minority—using a pioneering method: studying the translation of texts. Many Muslims in Norway either came from another country themselves or have progenitors who did. Important texts relating to Islam have mostly been available in languages other than Norwegian. This makes it possible to use translation as a lens for understan…

  • For the Greater Good

    Olav Elgvin•ARTICLE•Journal of Muslims in Europe•2023•References: 10

Under what circumstances do Sunni and Shiʿa organisations enter into institutional cooperation with each other? This article explores this question through a study of Muslim institutional cooperation in Norway from the late 1980s to the late 2010s, based on both archival sources and qualitative interviews. This period witnessed at first a very tight cooperation between Sunni and Shiʿa organisations, before the cooperation collapsed in the 1990s. …

  • Regulations in flux

    Open Access•Olav Elgvin•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of Islamic…•2022

When it comes to sharia regulations – or the question of Islamic norms more broadly – there are few areas which are of more direct relevance for the daily life of Muslims than the question of what to eat. For meat to be halal, several Islamic theologians have claimed that animals must be conscious at the time of slaughter. This method of slaughter, however, is not allowed under the laws of Norway, which require animals to be stunned before they c…

  • Når velferdsstaten bryter tilliten ned

    Open Access•J H Friberg, Olav Elgvin•ARTICLE•Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 40

  • Ideas Do Matter Politics and The Islamic Tradition Among Muslim Religious Leaders in Norway

Olav Elgvin•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Religion and…•2013

How do Muslim religious leaders in the West theologically and ideologically approach a liberal and democratic political system? This question was investigated through a case study on 14 leaders in the largest mosques of Norway, comprised of both imams and administrative or civil mosque leaders. They all regarded the Norwegian political system as a good system, and viewed the current situation in most of the Muslim world as bad. Nevertheless, they…

Religiøsitet og sekularisering blant ikke-vestlige -innvandrere i Norge Olav Elgvin & Kristian Rose Tronstad Denne studien undersøker religiøsitet hos ikke-vestlige innvandrere i Norge. Blir de mer eller mindre religiøse med økende botid? Hvilke faktorer henger sammen med høyere og lavere religiøsitet?
