From pedestrian area to urban and metropolitan project
The new pedestrian area has been one of the main urban projects designed for the centre of Brussels in recent decades. In 2015, the transit route in the city centre - Boulevard Anspach - was closed to traffic. The redevelopment of public space and the renovation of the main metro stations are now nearing completion. The finalisation of this urban project and the challenges it has faced are, by definition, complex. Experiences elsewhere in the cou…
From pedestrian area to urban project
The new pedestrian area in the centre of Brussels is one of the most important urban projects of the last decades. In 2015, the central traffic artery, Boulevard Anspach, was pedestrianised. The public space and the biggest metro stations must still be renovated. The implementation of this project and the challenges it faces are inherently complex. Experiences in Belgium and abroad show that the impact on the city centre of Brussels will be signi…

The impact of international institutions on Brussels
This paper develops an integrated assessment framework for costs and benefits related to the presence of international institutions in Brussels, Belgium. The assessment of the impact of international institutions in Brussels has until now been carried out in terms of macroeconometric cost-benefit analysis, mostly in monetary terms. We propose an alternative multi-criteria analysis with a spatial scope. The activities generating the impacts will b…
Brussels and culture
Observations The general context With globalisation economic development has gradually shifted from the production of industrial goods to investing in intangible goods and services (copyrights, patents, tourism, event creation, creation of images and brands, etc.), in which culture has a growing role. Culture in the broad sense is clearly becoming a factor of development and attractiveness in today’s competition between cities. Globalised cities …
Brussels as an international city
Observations The five characteristics discussed below illustrate the importance of internationalisation in Brussels. International connectivity Brussels is a highly connected city, located at the heart of Europe (note that 19% of the EU’s surface area plus Switzerland and Norway holds 60% of the population and represents 72% of the Europe’s GDP), and the centre of the continent’s densest motorway and high-speed train networks. Brussels’ rank amon…
Housing Projects for Low‐Income Groups and Modes of Economic Integration
The housing of low‐income groups in G reater C airo has always been difficult. However, the general shortage in housing supply is contrasting with the low occupancy rate of newly constructed public housing units. In contrast, despite their bad living conditions, informal settlements have a high occupancy rate. In order to analyse the reasons behind this contradiction, the paper compares four neighbourhoods ranging from formal and semi‐informal to…
Public spaces in the occupied Palestinian territories
Reclaiming Urbanity
This paper discusses the phenomenon of 'informal actors' influencing the agenda of urban planning and urban politics by means of temporary reappropriation and animation of 'indeterminate' spaces. The latter are spaces left out of 'time and place' with regard to their urban surroundings, mainly as a consequence of rampant deindustrialisation processes and the 'shrinking' city. The unclear and undetermined status of these urban 'no-man's-lands' may…
