Advancing theories on the scalar complexities of Green Sacrifice Zones
This article examines the concept of ‘green sacrifice’, a term coined to describe the processes through which specific territories are disproportionately affected by the extractive and deployment practices associated with green energy production, analyzed through a scalar lens. It engages in a theoretical discussion on how to conceptualize both territorial and non-territorial scales—where the latter are understood as political, non-hierarchical c…
Whose is that square? Cruise tourists’ mobilities and negotiation for public space in Barcelona
This paper investigates how different human mobilities negotiate public space and with which results. The case in point is that of cruise tourism in Barcelona, a city where the relentless growth of visitors and the expansion of accessibility gateways like the cruise port may well be behind the rise of “anti-tourism”TM voices in social and political circles. Our work focuses on the transits of cruise passenger groups in two exemplary public spaces…
Identifying and Classifying Small and Medium Sized Towns in Europe
This paper provides a first attempt at the construction of a unified, homogeneous inventory of different classes of urban settlements in the European space, building on the approach of international institutions such as OECD and the EU in relation to larger urban areas and extending it to the specific challenge presented by smaller settlements. Its objective is twofold. The first is to address the fundamental empirical problem that was central to…
Characterizing European urban settlements from population data
The cartographic identification and characterization of urban settlements is problematic, particularly in varied areas or in large geographical extensions. This is due to the divergence between morphological area structures and data attribution, which is generally available at the level of administrative units. Most existing experiences focus on small regions or use indirect data, from which only indirect information can be derived. This paper pr…
