Gender stereotyping in Indlela yababi and Kuxolelwa abanjani: A corpus linguistics approach
In this article, we use corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis to examine gender stereotyping in three isiZulu novels, namely Indlela yababi (‘The path of the wicked’) by RRR Dhlomo, Inkinsela yaseMgungundlovu (‘The tycoon of Pietermaritzburg’) by CLS Nyembezi, and Kuxolelwa abanjani? (‘Who deserves to be forgiven?’) by NG Sibiya. Our investigation regarding Inkinsela yaseMgungundlovu failed to deliver significant results, therefore o…

Afrika-oraliteit by Eugène Marais: Die wisselwerking tussen enkele “Sangedigte” en Dwaalstories
In this article I analyse the criticism surrounding two songs from a well-known collection of oral prose narratives told by a San performer, transcribed by the white Afrikaans author Eugène Marais and published as Dwaalstories (Wandering tales) first in 1921 as magazine stories and then in 1927 as a book. The songs, “Die towenares” (The sorceress) and “Hart-van-die-dagbreek” (Heart-of-the-daybreak), both form part of the oral prose narrative “Die…

Afrikaans stories of Jackal and Hyena: Oral and written traditions
This paper scrutinizes two wild relatives of dogs, namely jackals and hyenas, who feature prominently in Afrikaans children’s literature by way of African oral tradition, specifically Khoi oral literature. The stories of Jakkals (Jackal) and Wolf (Hyena) illustrate the ways in which Khoi orature found its way into Afrikaans (children’s) literature in a gradual process culminating in appropriation. The paper shows how Afrikaans literary scholars c…

Verstedeliking: Vergelyking tussen Suid-Afrikaanse letterkundes en die kultuurteks
Despite many efforts to publish comprehensive literary histories of South or Southern Africa in recent years, few studies existin which a thorough comparative study is undertaken between two or more South African literatures. This article wants to provide a practical example of such a study by comparing the urbanisation of Afrikaners in Afrikaans literature with that of black people as seen in English and Zulu literature. The statement made by Am…

The National Question in Antjie Krog’s “Transformation Trilogy”
This article explores the claim that the South African writer Antjie Krog is in essence asking the National Question in what I have termed her “transformation trilogy”: Country of My Skull (1998); A Change of Tongue (2003); and Begging to Be Black (2009). In writing about issues like “race”, identity and belonging in these texts, Krog is asking, “[t]o whom does the South African nation belong?” – a question that was central to debates about the N…

Implementing the Online Learning Community in Africa: A Unisa Case Study
Recent global occurrences are significantly affecting institutions of higher education, particularly on the continent of Africa. In addition, the process of the democratization of education has inevitably led to the explosive demands by the citizens of the different African countries for open admission to institutions of higher education. Against this background this article discusses recent developments at the University of South Africa (UNISA) …
Biografie in die pryslied: Die bydrae van Antjie Krog naas twee Xhosa pryssangers
This article explores praise poems as biographical documents. Antjie Krog’s poem “pryslied” (“praise poem”), written in reaction to Nelson Mandela’s presidential inauguration, is compared to two Xhosa praise poems performed at the inauguration. This comparison makes an appreciation of her poem as praise poem possible. The three praise poems are specifically analysed as texts in which the biography of Mandela is both reproduced and created. From t…
