  • What matters? Unlocking householders’ flexibility towards cooling automation in India

Open Access•Olufolahan Osunmuyiwa, Andrew Peacock et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Innovation and…•2023

In emerging economies like India, where air conditioners are projected to triple by 2050 — mostly from household use — demand response programs such as cooling automation have gained currency as a suitable approach to address peak electricity from cooling demand. Environmentally commoning/intentional communities are classic contexts in which flexible cooling consumption might be easily realised. Utilising materialist theory and a six-month coolin…

  • I cannot live without air conditioning! The role of identity, values and situational factors on cooling consumption patterns in India

    Open Access•Olufolahan Osunmuyiwa, Sarah R Payne et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 6

As the world continues to deal with climate-induced heat events, sustainable energy behaviours, or lifestyles combined with non-behavioural interventions have been identified as crucial pathways to curb the demand for air conditioners. Typically, ecological communities serve as a reference point for sustainable lifestyles as they have strong environmental self-identity and values and are more likely to further engage in pro-environmental and ener…

  • The Chief Eunuch of the Ottoman Harem: From African Slave to Power-Broker By JaneHathaway

    Open Access•A C S Peacock, Andrew Peacock•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Studies•2020

This fine study investigates the characteristic, but surprisingly under-researched, Ottoman institution of the Chief Harem Eunuch (Darüssaade Ağası) who played a prominent (and sometimes dominant) role in Ottoman court politics over the late sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, but survived to nearly the end of the dynasty. As Hathaway points out (p. 2), it is astonishing that no scholarly book-length study of the institution has been undertaken to…

  • Jeddah and the India Trade in the Sixteenth Century: Arabian Contexts and Imperial Policy

    A C S Peacock, Andrew Peacock•CHAPTER•Human Interaction with the…•2017

This article argues that despite the advent of Ottoman rule and the encroachment of the Portuguese, the commercial system of the sixteenth century Red Sea, in particular the trade in spices brought from India, was characterised by continuities with Mamluk practice. Further, it emphasises the importance of local politics, especially the role of the Sharifs of Mecca, and rivalries between individual Red Sea ports as factors in determining the natur…

  • From Anatolia to Aceh: Ottomans, Turks, and Southeast Asia

Andrew Peacock, Annabel Teh Gallop•BOOK•From Anatolia to Aceh•2015

The papers collected in this volume investigate the relationship between Southeast Asia and the Ottoman Empire. Southeast Asia has long been connected by trade, religion and political links to the wider world across the Indian Ocean, and especially to the Middle East through the faith of Islam. However, little attention has been paid to the ties between Muslim Southeast Asia—encompassing the modern nations of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapor…

"A.C.S. Peacock's book, Mediaeval Islamic Historiography and Political Legitimacy: Bal'ami's Tarikhnama is the first research monograph on this major historical work and shows how its composition and reception were influenced by political circumstances. Commissioned by the ruler of one of the largest and most powerful Muslims states of the tenth century, the Samanid dynasty of Central Asia, and composed by his vizier, the Tarikhnama tells us much…

  • The Enigma of ‘Aydhab: A Medieval Islamic Port on the Red Sea Coast

    Open Access•David Peacock, A C S Peacock et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2007•Cited by: 9•References: 5

The medieval Islamic port of ‘Aydhab played a major role in the hajj and in trade with Yemen, India and the Far East. A recent satellite image reveals the layout of the town in some detail, but there seems to be no trace of a viable harbour. Yet there was a fine secure harbour at Halaib, 20 km to the south. We tentatively suggest that the main port of ‘Aydhab was separate from the town. This hypothesis can only be verified by fieldwork and our ob…
