Maternal Stress and Excessive Weight Gain in Infancy
Rapid weight gain in infancy increases the risk of developing obesity early in life and contributes significantly to racial and ethnic disparities in childhood obesity. While maternal perceived stress is associated with childhood obesity, little is known about the impact it has on infant weight gain. Therefore, this study explores the impact of maternal perceived stress on change in weight-for-length (WFL) z-scores and the risk of rapid weight ga…

The Alternative Healthy Eating Index for Pregnancy (AHEI-P) me…

After summarizing the current attrition literature, the article proposes that parental decisions to enroll and remain in support programs are shaped by a variety of factors at different “levels” of influence: individual characteristics of the parent and family, provider attributes, program characterist…
Can Home Visitation Enhance Maternal Social Support
This study investigates the impacts of Healthy Start, a statewide, home visitation program, on the social support systems of 212 disadvantaged mothers in Oahu, Hawaii. Maternal support was assessed at the time these mothers gave birth and 12 months later with the Maternal Social Support Index. Comparisons of mothers randomly assigned to visited ( n = 108) or nonvisited ( n = 104) conditions uncover few differences on structural or affiliational a…
Risk assessment in child abuse prevention program
Risk assessment in child abuse prevention programs is a relatively new practice that has received little attention. This article explores two issues central to the use of risk assessment scales: (1) the validity of staff assessments of various risk factors and (2) the relationship between these risk factors and the participant's potential for child abuse. Providers at 11 prevention programs were asked to complete three risk assessment scales on a…
