Echoes from the edge
To be woke, you must be awake
To be woke, you must be awake: a critical response to white liberals Cleveland Hayes Great white hopes: the paradox of white liberals and critical whiteness studies My interaction with Critical Whiteness/Whiteness Scholars is usually someone who expects their good White people medal even though they repeatedly invoke and use whiteness to recreate and maintain their own position of superiority and White power (Hayes & Jurez, Citation2009).My respo…
Come and get your soul food”
In this paper, we contribute to the work in progress which outlines the contours of the praxis of Black intellectual traditions by illuminating the ways in which the pedagogy of Black teachers can serve as a model useful for the preparation of preservice and inservice teachers. Researchers have documented that the successful Black educators employ practices derived from critical perspectives that serve as the conduit for their instruction and int…
The salience of Black mentors on the teaching praxis of Latino male teachers
Despite the growing population of Latino students, little has been done to recognize the potential cultural assets and resilience that Latino communities and Latino teachers can bring to the educational environment. Using Critical Race Theory, in this article, each participant shares their experiences with their Black mentors. This article shares the ways in which Black teachers continue to exemplify Black teaching excellence now with a group tha…
Gay voices without intersectionality is White supremacy
The primary objective of this collection is to document the lived experiences of queer teachers of color who work in P-20 education, as a means of identifying and analyzing how the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality impact teaching dispositions and lived struggles. Similar to Anzaldua, Tate, and Valadez and Elsbree call for ‘queer border crossings’, working across epistemological boundaries and frameworks; the articles presented here cr…

Unhooking from Whiteness
"What happens to people when they choose to unhook from the rules and modes of thought whiteness requires and expects of them? Whiteness promotes a form of hegemonic thinking, which influences not only thought processes but also behavior within the academy. Working to dismantle the racism and whiteness that continue to keep oppressed people powerless and immobilized in academe requires sharing power, opportunity, and access. Removing barriers to …
On Being Named a Black Supremacist and a Race Traitor
We Teach Too
Over the past decade, increased attention to the marginalization of queers of color across educational context in North America has forced urgent reevaluations of the legal, political, and pedagogical implications of exclusionary politics (Brockenbrough, 2012, 2013; McCready, 2013). The research done by Brockenbrough (2013) cites the absences of queer of color perspectives in the educational literature and more specifically for this research thei…
Unhooking from Whiteness
The purpose of Unhooking from Whiteness: The Key to Dismantling Racism in the United States is to reconsider the ways and strategies in which antiracist scholars do their work, as well as to provide pragmatic ways in which people â White and of color â can build cross-racial, cross-communal, and cross-institutional coalitions to fight White supremacy. Employing the methodology of autoethnography, each chapter in this book illustrates the individu…
Self-fulfilling prophecy not
In this study, the pedagogies of the home used by Latinos as they attend schools in the USA are highlighted. We hope to use the stories of Arturo and Ruben, successful Latinos, as a means to show that Latinos are developing strategies that can be shared through the telling of their stories and to claim the value of voicing the difficult realities of Latinos as they resist falling victim to anticipated self-fulfilling prophecies and move creativel…
Social Justice is Not Spoken Here
Using the critical race theory methodology of counter-storytelling, the authors provide narratives of their experiences as teacher educators to consider why and how the racial power of Whiteness continues to derail teaching and learning for social justice in US teacher preparation programs, despite the democratic intentions, hard work and good will of many teacher educators. Contending that Whiteness serves as a hidden referent structuring intera…
You showed your Whiteness
The White liberal is a person who finds themselves defined as White, as an oppressor, in short, and retreats in horror from that designation. The desire to be and to be known as a good White person stems from the recognition that Whiteness is problematic, recognition that many White liberals try to escape by being demonstrably different from other, racist Whites. When good White liberals exhibit certain behaviors the expectation becomes a good Wh…
