Neo-Racism, Academic Advisor Intercultural (In)competence, and the Hindering of International Student Success
Despite persistent calls to support international students on campuses, there is little research about the attitudes that higher education professionals, in particular academic advisors, hold about international students. The impact of campus climate on queer-spectrum student academic success
This study examines how campus climate directly affects academic success for queer-spectrum students. The linear regression analysis model with all independent variables explained 23% of the variance in academic success for queer-spectrum undergraduate students (p < 0.001). Three major constructs related to campus climate significantly affected academic success for queer-spectrum undergraduate students, including students' comfort with campus cli…
The vacuous rhetoric of diversity
Recent news cycles have illuminated the disparate, racialized experiences of Black people in the United States but university leadership responses have been reactionary, or worse non-responsive. This study examines how university responses to national racial incidences such as the police brutality affect how faculty of color in one discipline understand the university’s commitment to diversity and ultimately how it affects the faculty experience.…
A Critical Review of the Model Minority Myth in Selected Literature on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Higher Education
This article presents a critical review of 112 works of research on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in higher education. It focuses on ways previous scholarship framed AAPIs in higher education, and specifically on how those works engaged in a sustained project of countering the model minority myth (MMM). Many publications on AAPIs in higher education mentioned the MMM and neglected to account for the original purpose of the MMM—to …
