Disrupting deficit mindsets
Introduction Continuous improvement (CI) has transformative potential but far too often that potential is unrealized. Practitioners engaging in CI are frequently guided by mindsets that derail system transformation by shifting the focus from improving systems to fixing people. Methods Employing multiple data sources (document analysis of dissertations in practice and interviews) this multi-case study examines nine cases of scholar-practitioners e…
Art as counternarratives
Like race, ‘nature’ is a social construct with meanings and conceptualizations that shift with time, context, and power. Dominant ideas of nature in the U.S. are often centred around whiteness and white preferences are normalized. To make these ‘invisible’ white preferences opaque, I (Alayna) use nature (with strikethrough) to indicate placing the concept of ‘nature’ under erasure and create openings for alternative meanings. Using a/r/tography, …
Good teaching, warm and demanding classrooms, and critically conscious students
Educational researchers have offered a number of different measures to explore the use of equity pedagogies. Such measures traditionally use teacher self-report as the primary metric and few investigate from the student perspective. This exploratory psychometric article details the use of a new instrument, the Asset-Based Equity Pedagogy Scale (ABEPSc), that captures the student perceptions of three constructs, one of which is criticality, which …
Continuous Improvement, Institutional Review Boards, and Resistance to Practitioner Scholarship
In this essay, we explore the tension between research using continuous improvement (CI) paradigms, such as improvement science, and conventional research, and the role and regulation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) oversight. We argue that the current regulatory structure privileges traditional research and hinders collaborative inquiry that centers the voice and agency of those traditionally marginalized. We also question whether IRBs shoul…
Legislating Instruction in Urban Schools
Scholars have documented the effects of accountability policies on student outcomes and, to a lesser extent, instruction. Beyond test preparation and curriculum narrowing, little empirical evidence has examined the relationship between policy and pedagogy. Guided by social cognitive and achievement goal theories, this study explored the relationship between U.S. federal education policies and teacher-reported classroom goal orientation. Survey da…

Black educators represent a small percentage of the educator workforce. In this manuscript, we examine the institutional and leadership conditions which contribute to the liminal presence of Black women educators specifically. We nuance the discussion about Black women educators to help educational leaders gain a deeper understanding of their: commitments to Black students, experiences with organizational oppression, and navigational techniques. …
School Leadership Team Competence for Implementing Equity Systems Change
Pulpit, Pews and Picket Lines
Critics of Black liberation theology often argue it never left the halls of the academy; the case of Milton Galamison proves such assertions to be false. This article, drawing from archival resources that include Galamison's unpublished autobiography and sermons spanning decades, teases out the sources and norms of his theology, the myriad responses from congregants, and details his involvement with the struggle to integrate the largest school di…
Increasing access
Today, I want to argue, the most urgent social issue affecting poor people and people of color is economic access. In today's world, economic access and full citizenship depend crucially on math and science literacy. I believe that the absence of math literacy in urban and rural communities throughout this country is an issue as urgent as the lack of registered Black voters in Mississippi was in 1961. (Moses and Cobb, 2002, p. 5) Robert Moses, Ci…
Culture as mediator
Purpose Self-regulation is defined as strategic, metacognitive behavior, motivation and cognition aimed at a goal (Zimmmerman and Schunk, 2011). Co-regulation, arguably more aligned with norms in communal cultures, is the process of learners sharing “a common problem-solving plane” through which self-regulatory strategies are learned (Hadwin and Oshaige, 2011, p.247). This paper aims to investigate the impact of co-regulation on self-regulation a…
