The Urban Built Environment, Walking and Mental Health Outcomes Among Older Adults
The benefits of walking in older age include improved cognitive health (e.g. mental alertness, improved memory functioning) and a reduced risk of stress, depression and dementia. However, research capturing the benefits of walking among older people in real-time as they navigate their world is currently very limited. This study explores cognitive health and wellbeing outcomes in older people as they walk in their local neighborhood environment. T…
Does traffic congestion influence the location of new business establishments? An analysis of the San Francisco Bay Area
Chronic traffic congestion is widely assumed to negatively affect regional economic performance, but this assumption has been only lightly tested. We examine the traffic congestion–economic performance link using data for the San Francisco Bay Area and find that the effect of traffic on the regional economy may be both less significant and more nuanced than is widely assumed. Our analysis examines how traffic congestion affects the location of ne…
Persistent Differences in Walking across the Socioeconomic Spectrum
The relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and walking remains underexamined, and prior research identifies multiple models of walking behavior. This research examines the distribution of walking across SES, using the 2001, 2009, and 2017 National Household Travel Surveys. Statistical models estimate walking rates and likelihoods by trip purpose, controlling for income, education, and other factors. Findings include less walking by middl…
Is traffic congestion overrated? Examining the highly variable effects of congestion on travel and accessibility
Five-star transportation
Accessibility and Cognition
Spatial behaviour and decision-making require knowledge of the urban environment, including opportunities available and the means to reach them. Thus, variations in spatial knowledge can result in radically different levels of effective accessibility, despite similar locations, demographics and other factors commonly thought to influence travel behaviour. Cognitive maps, which develop primarily through wayfinding and travel experience, are indivi…
