  • Public capital stock and interstate variations in manufacturing efficiency

Open Access•John K Mullen, Martin Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•1996

This study focuses on the role of public capital stock in contributing to interstate differences in productive efficiency in manufacturing. Our motivation is to assess the role of public capital as a source of persistent regional variations in efficiency, and thus determine if public infrastructure policies might reasonably be expected to alter the competitive environment of a state's manufacturing sector. We use a stochastic frontier production …

  • Capital and Labour Efficiencies

    Open Access•Martin Williams, Ronald L Moomaw•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1989•References: 8

We use Sato's factor-augmenting technical progress approach to calculate rates of growth of capital efficiency, labour efficiency, and efficiency-based total factor productivity growth in manufacturing by state. Capital efficiency gains, but not labour efficiency gains, have accompanied the rapid output growth of southern and western states. Regression analysis indicates that variables measuring scale effects, education, urbanisation, capital int…

  • Agglomeration Economies

    Open Access•Ronald L Moomaw•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1988•Cited by: 10•References: 8

I estimate localization and urbanization economies with a methodology and data different from those of Henderson and Nakamura. After demonstrating the problems associated with using a single agglomeration variable, I present my estimates. As Nakamura found for Japanese cities, I find evidence of both localization economies and urbanization economies but I also find evidence of urbanization diseconomies in some industries, as did Henderson. My evi…

  • A Note on Population Size, Industrial Diversification, and Regional Economic Instability

    Open Access•H L Brewer, Ronald L Moomaw•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This study investigates the relationships among city size, economic stability, and various measures of industrial diversification. It was prompted by the conflicting findings of previous researchers concerning the above relationships. It finds different relationships between city size and various diversification measures. Therefore, part of the past disagreement may be due to the use of different definitions of diversification. The study also sho…

  • Productivity and City Size

    Ronald L Moomaw•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•1981

A critique of two leading articles in the productivity and city-size literature results in revised estimates of the productivity advantages of large cities. In particular, extant estimates of the elasticity of productivity with city size are revised downward by over 100 percent for the manufacturing sector and about 25 percent for the entire urban economy. After revision, productivity advantages of larger cities are found to be much larger for th…
