  • Cultural activities and corporate geography in a city

    Open Access•Ichiro Watanabe, Chie Koga et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2026•References: 53

This study examines the spatial relationship between cultural activities, particularly art events, and the distribution of corporate headquarters within Tokyo’s 23 special wards. To this end, we employ the Wasserstein distance and Monte Carlo simulations with stratified sampling to statistically assess the spatial proximity between art events and the headquarters of large firms at different stages of their corporate life cycles. The analysis reve…

  • Association between internet use and annual health checkups among older Japanese adults

Open Access•Yuya Ando, Yuiko Nagamine et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This study concludes that there is a positive association between Internet use and participation in annual health checkups among older individuals in Japan. The results suggest that Internet use may serve as a tool to promote preventive healthcare practices in older populations. However, the study underscores the need for further investigation to understand the underlying mechanisms of this association and to establish a causal relationship

  • Does the neighborhood built and social environment reduce long-term care costs for Japanese older people? The Jages2010-2019 cohort study

    Open Access•Yuru Chen, Masamichi Hanazato et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Japan's population has been aging steadily, evidenced by it spending JPY 11 trillion (USD 110 billion) on annual long-term care (LTC) costs in 2021. In this context, understanding the factors influencing LTC costs has become increasingly vital. Although studies have reported positive relationships between neighborhood environment and health outcomes, the connection between LTC costs and neighborhood environment remains unclear. To address this ga…

  • Assessing the social atmosphere

Open Access•Chie Koga, Kosuke Takemura et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2024•References: 19

Social atmospheres influence individuals' behaviors. Multilevel analysis evaluates atmospheres by capturing contextual effects beyond individual factors. While social participation benefits well-being and society, studies on the links between community factors, including social atmosphere, are still scarce. We explored the association between community social connections and social participation among adults in Japan. Cross-sectional data were co…

  • The association between elder abuse and refrainment from daily activities during the Covid-19 pandemic among older adults in Japan

Open Access•Chie Koga, Teruyuki Tsuji et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2022

The risk of elder abuse increased as the number of refrained behaviors increased which suggests that refrainment from multiple behaviors may significantly increase the risk of elder abuse, compared with refrainment from a single behavior. To avoid increasing the risk of abuse in likely future pandemics, it is necessary to maintain social connections without face-to-face contact, or with adequate infection control measures

  • Association between Proximity of the Elementary School and Depression in Japanese Older Adults

Open Access•Megumi Nishida, Masamichi Hanazato et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Depression among older adults is one of the most critical public health issues. The proximity of elementary schools has been positively associated with neighborhood social cohesion and quality of life. However, no studies have identified an association between the proximity of elementary school and older adults' mental health. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between the proximity of elementary schools, one of the core facil…

  • What Types of Greenspaces Are Associated with Depression in Urban and Rural Older Adults? A Multilevel Cross-Sectional Study from Jages

Open Access•Miho Nishigaki, Masamichi Hanazato et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Depression in older adults is a public health challenge. We aimed to clarify the relationship between depression in older adults and three types of neighborhood greenspaces: trees, grasslands, and fields. We utilized data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES) performed in 2016. Multilevel logistic regression analysis was used for non-stratified and stratified analyses for the urban-rural regions. The target population comprised 1…
