Sustainable development
This article contributes to the theoretical knowledge of sustainable development operationalized in a sustainable development space based on three sustainable development imperatives: needs, justice, and limits. The space is constituted by six primary goals with associated key indicators and thresholds. Moreover, the article contributes to empirical knowledge about where different countries are in relation to this space based on data from 144 cou…
Conditions for just offshore wind energy
Global investment in offshore wind energy is anticipated to surge in the coming decades. While improved technology, reduced costs, and generous policy support are frequently acknowledged as driving factors, many assert that there are fewer societal challenges with offshore renewable installations than with onshore ones. Drawing from a co-creation process with key Norwegian stakeholders and an interdisciplinary team of social science and humanitie…

Unpacking democracy
Given democracies’ moderate success in combatting climate change, some have questioned whether democracy makes it harder, not easier, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Two decades of research, however, has not provided an unequivocal answer. Recent studies argue that this is because democracy has been measured with a single indicator, rather than by its multiple and varied characteristics. In this study, we focus on a subset of democratic quali…
Closing the sustainable development gap
Meeting one sustainable development goal on human needs, social justice, or environmental limits can make it harder (or easier) to meet others. The extent to which countries succeed in reconciling these goals is context specific but depends largely on how we organize society and on what policy options and strategies we use. We present a model for sustainable development consisting of six indicators and assign thresholds that define a sustainable …
Grand Narratives for sustainable mobility
The concept of sustainable mobility has had a relatively short life, first being used about 30 years ago. In that time, some progress has been made, but transport is still not contributing enough to the internationally set reduction targets for carbon emissions. This paper provides a conceptual review that presents nine narratives addressing elements of sustainable mobility, each of which has been derived from a review of the agents and strategie…
The Imperatives of Sustainable Development
The United Nations sustainable development goals are under fire. By attempting to cover all that is good and desirable in society, these targets have ended up as vague, weak, or meaningless. We suggest a model for sustainable development based on three moral imperatives: satisfying human needs, ensuring social equity, and respecting environmental limits. The model reflects Our Common Future's central message, moral imperatives laid out in philoso…
Sustainable development
No clear definition of sustainable development exists to guide politicians in solving challenges at the global or regional levels. Rather, the concept's use has increasingly reflected socially desirable attributes of solutions to local- and project-level problems, but these ignore the global challenges that the concept was meant to address. We return to the original definition of sustainable development used in the Brundtland Report and suggest a…
Troublesome Leisure Travel
Sustainable passenger transport policies are most often directed towards everyday travel and ignore the large and expanding amount of leisure travel. The paper examines whether policies aimed at reducing energy consumption and CO 2 emissions for everyday travel may have the opposite effect on leisure travel by reviewing studies of three sustainable passenger transport policies: developing more compact cities, building pro-environment awareness an…
The sustainable development area
The aim of this article is to provide a simple and coherent framework for assessing the sustainability of present and future development policies. First, we present the major characteristics of the sustainability concept along three dimensions and suggest how these dimensions can be measured. Second, we construct a diagram, the sustainable development area, and employ data from 118 countries to evaluate the global situation with regard to sustain…
