Visuals Speak Louder Than Words
Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosure has become a strategic instrument for firms seeking sustainable development and long‐term value. Unlike prior literature that focus on the ESG disclosure, this paper investigates how ESG report design (i.e., visualization and report length) affects corporate financing costs. Theoretically, we formally incorporate visualization and length into an ESG asset‐pricing framework, establishing a nov…

The impact of rail transit openings on the purchase of cars with different fuel economy
Excessive car ownership in cities has led to issues including congestion, air pollution and resource consumption. This paper investigates the impact of rail transit openings on automobile purchases in China based on detailed car sales data during 2013–2015 and using two-way fixed effects panel models. Our study reveals an average decrease of 2.27 per cent in car sales due to rail transit openings. Further analyses of cars with different fuel econ…
Unveiling Adolescent Suicidality
Adolescent suicide attempts are on the rise, presenting a significant public health concern. Recent research aimed at improving risk assessment for adolescent suicide attempts has turned to machine learning. But no studies to date have examined the performance of stacked ensemble algorithms, which are more suitable for low-prevalence conditions. The existing machine learning-based research also lacks population-representative samples, overlooks p…
The Welfare Cost of Beijing’s Lottery Policy
Motivated by traffic congestion and air pollution, Beijing is one of several major cities to restrict vehicle ownership by requiring residents to win a lottery for the right to obtain an additional car. We examine the welfare cost of preventing people from owning cars because of misallocation: under a lottery, some individuals with low willingness to pay (WTP) for cars can obtain cars, while other individuals with high WTP cannot. We estimate wel…

Suicide trends in the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic
Marital status and suicide risk
Research has shown that people who have never been married, divorced, or widowed are at an increased risk of suicide compared with those who are married, but we have little knowledge as to how this elevated risk is modified by socioeconomic factors, and little research has studied the risk among persons enduring a marital separation. This study addressed these issues with individual-level data from Norwegian national registers. All suicide cases …
Trajectories of antidepressant use before and after a suicide attempt among refugees and Swedish-born individuals
Despite previous reports on refugees being undertreated regarding psychiatric healthcare, no major differences in antidepressant treatment between refugees and Swedish-born suicide attempters were found

Local Residents’ Attitudes toward Shale Gas Exploitation
This study investigates local residents’ attitudes toward shale gas exploitation in China through interviews of 730 residents of Sichuan Province and explores determinants of their support or opposition. It is the first study in China to explore local residents’ attitudes on this subject and we identify underlying factors contributing to such attitudes, including energy poverty, environmental awareness, and risk and benefit perceptions. The resul…

Building a Set of Internationally Comparable Value of Statistical Life Studies
This study is the eighth in a series of stated-preference studies designed to enhance the basis for international benefits transfer of value of statistical life (VSL) estimates. The series has fielded essentially similar stated-preference surveys in Canada, China, France, Italy, Japan, Mongolia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This Chinese study estimates the willingness to pay for contemporaneous and future mortality risk reductions o…
Distance to work in Beijing
In this study, we use a large sample from the Beijing Household Travel Survey to build husband-wife dyads, construct variables to measure bargaining power between spouses and place intra-household travel arrangements within a broader institutional framework to analyse relationships between institutions, bargaining power and travel patterns of married men and women. The empirical results reveal that bargaining power does matter in determining intr…
Long-term trends of suicide by choice of method in Norway
The present study demonstrates different time trends for different suicide methods with significant reductions in suicide by firearms, drowning and poisoning after the peak in the suicide rate in the late 1980s. Suicide by means of hanging continuously increased, but did not fully compensate for the reduced use of other methods. This lends some support for the effectiveness of method-specific suicide preventive measures, such as restrictions to t…
Psychometric Characteristics of Chinese Version of Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 in Suicides and Living Controls of Rural China
The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BIS-11) is an important tool for measuring impulsivity in suicide research. This study aimed to assess psychometric characteristics of Chinese version of BIS-11 in suicides and controls of rural China. Data of 200 pairs of suicide cases and living controls were collected by psychological autopsy method. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients of BIS-11 were 0.936 for suicides, and 0.892 for living controls. Convergen…
Sexual Victimization and Completed Suicide Among Danish Female Adults
Although sexual victimization has been associated with suicidal behaviors, its association with completed suicide has not been examined. We investigated this association among Danish women using longitudinal data and a conservative definition of victimization. This population-based case-control study included 476 suicide cases and 12,010 matched controls. Seven cases (1.5%) and 5 controls (0.04%) experienced sexual victimization that was reported…
Psychiatric illness, socioeconomic status, and marital status in people committing suicide
Study objective: Suicides cluster in both families and persons with psychiatric disorders and socioeconomic disadvantages. This study compares these factors between suicide cases, their siblings, and population based controls in an attempt to evaluate both the familial and the individual element of these factors. Design: Nested case-control study. Information on causes of death, psychiatric admission, marital status, children, and socioeconomic f…
Suicide Risk in Relation to Socioeconomic, Demographic, Psychiatric, and Familial Factors
OBJECTIVE: Suicide risk was addressed in relation to the joint effect of factors regarding family structure, socioeconomics, demographics, mental illness, and family history of suicide and mental illness, as well as gender differences in risk factors. METHOD: Data were drawn from four national Danish longitudinal registers. Subjects were all 21,169 persons who committed suicide in 1981-1997 and 423,128 live comparison subjects matched for age, ge…
Gender differences in risk factors for suicide in Denmark
BACKGROUND: Gender is one of the most frequently replicated predictors for suicide. AIMS: To identify risk factors for suicide among males and females and to investigate whether risk factors for suicide differ by gender. METHOD: A time-matched nested case-control design was performed using Danish longitudinal register databases to obtain 811 suicide cases and 79 871 controls. Data were analysed using conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: A hi…
