  • How important is perception of safety to park use? A four-city survey

    Open Access•Sandra C Lapham, Deborah A Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 18

Our purpose was to determine the relative importance of individual- and park-related characteristics in influencing both local park use and specific engagement in active sports, walking and sedentary pursuits. We surveyed 3815 adults living within 0.80 km of one of 24 study parks in four US metropolitan areas. Chi-square statistics and baseline-category logit models examined how perceived safety and park characteristics were related to park visit…

  • Convicted Driving-While-Impaired Offenders' Views on Effectiveness of Sanctions and Treatment

    Open Access•Sandra Lapham, Sandra C Lapham et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 38

In this article we analyze qualitative data from a multiple-method, longitudinal study drawn from 15-year follow-up interviews with a subsample of 82 individuals arrested for driving while intoxicated in a southwestern state (1989-1995). We explore reactions to the arrest and court-mandated sanctions, including legal punishments, mandated interventions, and/or participation in programs aimed at reducing recidivism. Key findings include experienci…

Sandra Lapham, Sandra C Lapham•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2010

  • Effectiveness of Bans and Laws in Reducing Traffic Deaths: Legalized Sunday Packaged Alcohol Sales and Alcohol-Related Traffic Crashes and Crash Fatalities in New Mexico

Garnett P Mcmillan, Sandra Lapham et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 13

We determined the relative risk of alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents and fatalities after New Mexico lifted its ban on Sunday packaged alcohol sales. We extracted all alcohol-related crashes from New Mexico police reports for 3652 days between July 1, 1990, and June 30, 2000, and found a 29% increase in alcohol-related crashes and a 42% increase in alcohol-related crash fatalities on Sundays after the ban on Sunday packaged alcohol sales wa…

  • Staff perspectives on methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) in a large southwestern jail

    Garnett P Mcmillan, Sandra C Lapham•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2005

The purpose of the study was to develop and test an instrument to measure knowledge about methadone maintenance treatment, attitudes towards drug addiction, readiness to adopt a methadone maintenance program, and to determine how the staff at a large metropolitan detention center score on these domains. We developed a 45-item “Knowledge, Attitudes, and Readiness to Adopt” survey and administered it to 114 jail staff. The anonymous survey was psyc…

  • Use of Computerized Prenatal Interviews for Assessing High-Risk Behaviors Among American Indians

Open Access•Lapham, Lapham Lapham et al.•ARTICLE•American Indian and Alaska Native…•1997

The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes among American Indians and to compare self-reported information collected under two computer interview conditions: an "anonymous" (N = 183) versus a "confidential" (N = 210) format. Results indicated that under 10% in both groups reported either use of cigarettes or other drugs of abuse, 16% reported risky drinking, 39% reported psychologi…

  • Demonstration of a mixed social/medical model detoxification program for homeless alcohol abusers

    Open Access•Sandra C Lapham, Marge Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•1996•References: 14

Typically, insurance carriers and the federal government (through Medicare and Medicaid) have paid for alcohol detoxification only in hospital settings. This approach, known as the medical or the clinical model, controls detoxification almost exclusively through medication and with medically trained professional staff (DenHartog, 1982). Yet the far less expensive, already widespread for alcohol detoxification may be a viable alternative. Since th…

  • Use of a medical center's computerized health care database for notifiable disease surveillance

Margaret Watkins, Sandra C Lapham et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1991•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The sensitivity of a medical center's inpatient and outpatient database to detect notifiable diseases was examined. Only 53 percent of inpatient and 7 percent of outpatient laboratory-confirmed cases of shigellosis, salmonellosis, giardiasis, and hepatitis were identified by an automated search for matching diagnosis codes. Reasons for lack of sensitivity include nonavailability of laboratory results at the time of diagnosis assignment, use of a …
