Further Evidence on the Accuracy of Residential Vacancy Chain Models
Residential vacancy chain models simulate the transfer of vacant housing opportunities among sectors of an urban housing market. The Markov model simulates forward-reaching chains in response to vacancy initiations. The Leontief model simulates backward-reaching chains in response to vacancy absorptions. Each simulates residential mobility among housing sectors as a by-product. The accuracy of these models was assessed in earlier work by the auth…
The Predictive Accuracy of Residential Vacancy Chain Models
The focus of this report is on the predictive accuracy of residential vacancy chain models. There are two objectives. The first is to define the mathematical structure of a pair of multisectoral residential vacancy chain models. These models simulate the intersectoral transfer of vacant housing opportunities in response to either the creation of new opportunities or the absorption of existing ones. Residential mobility is given as an analytical b…

Structural Determinants of Occupational Mobility in a Regional Labor Market
The purpose of this paper is to identify structural determinants of intraregional occupational mobility. This is done by developing a Markov chain model of job-vacancy transfers, disaggregating that model into its constituent parts, and identifying each part with a unique structural determinant. The disaggregated Markov model yields probabilities of mobility among occupational sectors for specific subgroups of mobile workers. To clarify ideas, a …

On the Duality of Opportunity and Price in a Multisectoral Model of an Urban Housing Market
Previously unrecognized relationships between housing opportunities, residential mobility, and housing prices are identified within a multisectoral model of vacancy transfers within a local housing market. The relationships are identified by presenting the vacancy-transfer model as a simple linear program. The primal program seeks a vector of vacancy transfers which minimizes the volume of new stock additions among market sectors required to sati…
On the Duality of Employment and Wages in the Garin-Lowry Model
Previously undiscovered properties of the Garin-Lowry model are identified by presenting the model as a simple linear program. The primal program seeks a spatial allocation of employment which minimizes import requirements while satisfying basic-employment demand. The dual program seeks a spatial allocation of employee remuneration which maximizes the imputed value of basic employment while insuring that employee wages are not exceeded by the imp…
