What shapes a livable city? Subjective and objective determinants of city satisfaction in Romania
This article examines urban quality of life in 41 Romanian cities by combining survey evidence from the 2020 Urban Barometer ( N = 13,380) with a spatially detailed Quality of Life Index (QOLI) derived from OpenStreetMap and census data. Using hierarchical logistic regression, we assess how individual perceptions and city-level conditions shape city satisfaction. Results show that facilities and services, environmental quality, and governance con…
Geography of contestation: A study on the Yellow Vest movement and the rise of populism in France
The rise of a geography of discontent highlighted in recent studies points to a strong association between voting for populist parties and territories with socioeconomic difficulties. While discontent has primarily been addressed through the analysis of populist votes, we provide additional elements of analysis by comparing these populist votes to the Yellow Vest movement, and we distinguish the populist votes coming from the far‐left party from …

The French School of Proximity: Genesis and evolution of a school of thought
In this chapter, we revisit the origins and genesis of the French school of proximity and its evolution trough time, in order to better understand how and why the small group of researchers who were the driving force of this new way of thinking were quickly able to get a real legitimacy and effective recognition. First of all, it was clear that the role of space in economic dynamics was too often the subject of confusion and abusive assertions. A…

The ex-ante impact of conflict over infrastructure settings on residential property values: The case of Paris’s suburban zones
The presence of nearby public facilities has an impact on real-estate values; for this reason, the market may reasonably anticipate that public infrastructure projects will affect house prices. But undesirable and semi-desirable facility location choices may be contested by nearby residents, as they are a source of negative externalities or expectations. In Paris’s suburban zones, opposition to these infrastructures is frequent, and the official …

Proximity and Localization
Torre A. and Rallet A. (2005) Proximity and localization, Regional Studies39, 47- 59. The objective of this paper is to pave the way for an analysis of the relations between proximity and localization of activities and people, two notions that are often mistaken for one another. Our method consists in exploiting the semantic wealth of the notion of proximity. We distinguish two types of proximity (geographical and organized) and propose a grid of…
Proximité et localisation
Proximity and location - The objective of this article is to pave the way for an analysis of the relations between proximity and localization. (I) We distinguish two types of proximity (geographical proximity and organized proximity) and propose a grid of analysis of the main models of geographic organization of activities by articulating both types of proximity. We then introduce the phenomenon of tension between geographical proximity and organ…
