‘Peak Car’ — Themes and Issues
Road pricing with complications
Estimating the agglomeration benefits of transport investments: Some tests for stability
Air travel choices in multi-airport markets
Atomistic congestion tolls at concentrated airports? Seeking a unified view in the internalization debate
Fuel Efficiency and Motor Vehicle Travel: The Declining Rebound Effect
We estimate the rebound effect for motor vehicles, by which improved fuel efficiency causes additional travel, using a pooled cross section of US states for 1966-2001. Our model accounts for endogenous changes in fuel efficiency, distinguishes between autocorrelation and lagged effects, includes a measure of the stringency of fuel-economy standards, and allows the rebound effect to vary with income, urbanization, and the fuel cost of driving. At …
Transport tax reform, commuting, and endogenous values of time
Parking Policies and Road Pricing
There are two main sources of inefficiency in urban transport markets. First, transport prices fail to reflect the external costs of travel, notably peak-period external congestion costs. Secondly, a large percentage of drivers park for free, particularly at the workplace. Economic theory suggests, in the absence of other market distortions, that efficiency can be restored with a perfectly differentiated external cost charge in conjunction with r…
