Persistence as Sustainability
The concept of settlement persistence, the duration of occupation of a settlement, has gained traction in archaeology as a way of articulating analyses of past societies in relation to sustainability science. Here we compare the durations of large settlements across South-West Asia and the Nile Delta from 10,000 to 1000 years bp to investigate the drivers of persistence, and therefore sustainability. Southwest Asia saw the emergence of large settlements in the Early Holocene, and the world’s first urban communities around 6000 years ago, with cities a feature of the region ever since. These developed in diverse environmental settings, including the dry-farming plains of Northern Mesopotamia, the irrigated alluvium of Southern Mesopotamia and the more variegated landscapes of the Levant.
