  • Peripheralization through mass housing urbanization in Hong Kong, Mexico City, and Paris

Open Access•Anne Kockelkorn, Christian Schmid et al.•ARTICLE•Planning Perspectives•2023

This article compares how state-initiated mass housing urbanization has contributed to processes of peripheralization in three very different historical and geopolitical settings: in Paris from the 1950s to the 1990s in Hong Kong from the 1950s to 2010s and in Mexico City from the 1990s to the 2010s. We understand mass housing urbanization as large-scale industrial housing production based on the intervention of state actors into the urbanization…

  • Plot by Plot: Plotting Urbanism as an Ordinary Process of Urbanisation

Open Access•Ozan Karaman, Lindsay Sawyer et al.•ARTICLE•Antipode•2020•Cited by: 25•References: 68

  • Territorially-nested urbanization in China - the case of Dongguan

    Kit Ping Wong•ARTICLE•Eurasian Geography and Economics•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 8

This paper explores the question of extended urbanization by arguing for the need to overcome dualistic views to properly address the political specificities of urbanization in China. To this end, this paper understands state-territorial relations as a process of étatization by drawing on the particular literature on the role of the party-state in urbanization. Through a brief history of Guangdong, it elaborates on the political modalities of ter…

  • Towards a new vocabulary of urbanisation processes: A comparative approach

    Open Access•Christian Schmid, Ozan Karaman et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2018•Cited by: 58•References: 44

Contemporary processes of urbanisation present major challenges for urban research and theory as urban areas expand and interweave. In this process, urban forms are constantly changing and new urban configurations are frequently evolving. An adequate understanding of urbanisation must derive its empirical and theoretical inspirations from the multitude of urban experiences across the various divides that shape the contemporary world. New concepts…
