Exploring the enigma of Miriam, the woman Mary was called after
In this article, the enigmatic figure of Miriam in the Pentateuch is examined. There are three instances (Ex 2:1–10; Ex 15:20–21; Nm 12:1–6) where Miriam plays a role in the history of the people of Israel as recorded in the Pentateuch. Each of these passages is investigated by paying attention to the literary features of each passages followed by an investigation of how Miriam is portrayed in each passage. Attention is devoted to the narrative s…
Chiasm in Zephaniah 3
This contribution focuses on Zephaniah 3:14-17 and investigates the chiastic structure of the pericope methodologically. The history of research on this unit shows that not all commentaries recognise the chiastic structuring of this unit, while others opt for a parallelism rather than a chiastic structure. The reason why the chiastic structuring will be the focus of this investigation is that, while scholars, in more recent research, have recogni…
Juxtaposition as literary feature in Psalm 116
Identifying literary devices used in the (Hebrew) Old Testament serves as an aid to the understanding of a particular passage. In this contribution, juxtaposition as a literary device in Psalm 116 was investigated. A brief overview of the main problems in the research history of the Psalm is given, highlighting the date and composition, as well as the enigmatic verse 15. Drawing on other definitions of the term juxtaposition , the term was define…
The Trinity and the Old Testament
Confessing God as the triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) is central to the Christian faith. A basic conviction is that the triune God is also the solitary God of the Old Testament. The problem that emanated from this conviction is how to relate the triune God with the one God of the Old Testament. It is argued that New Testament authors made use of Old Testament metaphors to conceptualise God as the triune God. The central question mentione…
Exploring Exodus themes in the book of Amos
There is little doubt that the exodus event is regarded as a most important turning point for Israel’s understanding of itself. The aim of this article is to investigate the occurrence of the Exodus tradition in the book of Amos. Once the occurrence of the exodus tradition has been determined the second aim is to establish the function of the exodus tradition in the book. This is done by providing the reader with cursory overview of the exodus ev…
Some thoughts on the relationship between Old Testament studies and systematic theology
This article explores the relationship between Old Testament studies and systematic theology. After an overview of what Old Testament studies and systematic theology comprise, a historical overview of the problem is given. Two examples of the problem are provided (the USA and South Africa) before the author proceeds to his own views. The article argues that the two subjects have grown so far apart that it is doubtful whether the interaction betwe…
Some preliminary thoughts on epistemological transformation and the study of the Old Testament
This contribution addressed the question of epistemological transformation in the study of the Old Testament in South Africa. Epistemological transformation entails the way in which we think of knowledge: what do we teach, why do we teach the knowledge that we teach and how do we teach? This contribution focused on the first and second aspects of knowledge. The aspect of transformation brings to mind the post 1994 situation in South Africa. In vi…
Once again
The identity of the three figures mentioned in Malachi 3:1 remains an intriguing question for scholars. In this article an overview of the current state of research on this problem is given highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the different solutions while yet another proposal is made adding some new arguments to existing answers. An overview on the history of research done on this problem can be categorised into three groups: the three f…
The land as a Leitmotiv in the book of Amos
The hypothesis argued is that the theme of the land serves as a leitmotiv in the book of Amos. The focus of this investigation will be on the occurrence of the words normally used in connection with the land, that is eretz (Jra) and adamā (hmda), in the book of Amos. The land is promised and granted (2:9-10; 3:2,9) to the people to live in and enjoy the produce the land yields but their stay in the land is not unconditional. Unfortunately, only a…
Oor die inspirasie van die Bybel – ’n Perspektief van ’n Ou Testamentikus
This article is an attempt to engage in a onversation between biblical scholars and their dogmatic colleagues on the issue of the inspiration of the Bible. It is argued that current theories on the inspiration of the Bible can no longer be maintained in the light of our knowledge of the origin and growth of especially the Old Testament. Because of the fact that the Old Testament came into being over a considerable period of time, the idea of insp…
Psalm 126
Psalm 126: Looking from the present to the past and future: W S Prinsloo's synchronic textimmanent exegesis of Psalm 126 results in a two part division of the psalm (verses 1-4 and 5-6), In this contribution his results are questioned and a three-pan division (a possibility Prinsloo did not consider) is proposed, consisting of verses 1-3, 4 and 5-6, The result of the present investigation confirms (also from a synchronic textimmanent approach app…
Trends in the history of research on the problem of violence in the Old Testament
Violence as theological problem is a relative newcomer to the scene of Old Testament studies. It was only during the 1970’s that violence was given major attention by Old Testament scholars. In a number of studies the main focus was on Yahweh and his relation to violence. By the late I970’s the theories of Rene Girard on violence were applied to the Old Testament and played an important role in the thinking of Old Testament scholars on violence. …
'Violence' in Amos 3,10 and 6,3
Violence, the Old Testament and a new South Africa In the light of the current violence in South Africa the question posed in the paper is the question on how the appearance of violence in the Old Testament should be evaluated from a theological point of view. After a brief survey of the present state of research on this theme, a theological insight into the problem of violence in the Old Testament is proposed. Finally, the relevance of this them…
