What’s in a Noun? Identification and Externalisation of Generic Illness and Trouble in the Aramaic Magic Bowls
Being mostly apotropaic, Aramaic magic bowls emphasise the ills or troubles they are to protect against. Among these are lists of threats identified by making a collective noun from a verb, for instance ‘the slayers’ or ‘the destroyers’. In this they follow other ancient sources that identify disease as an external entity that had somehow invaded the patient, and health would be restored when the unwelcome visitor departed. Introduction
This introduction sets out the basic premises for the special issue on diagnosis and taxonomy in late antique healing. Drawing on recent insights from history of medicine, we consider health and healing as broader, sociocultural phenomena and argue that to understand late antique healing practices we must understand late antiquity. Throughout the issue we see that medical taxonomies and diagnostics rely not only on (ancient) biology, but also inc…
Jødedomsundervisning i fagfornyelsen

I lys av dette ser jeg på hvordan jødedom har blitt undervist i i norsk og nordisk religions- og livssynsundervisning, for så å utforske om og hvordan LK20 og dens vektlegging av dybdelæring kan svare på utfordringen…
Introduction
This special issue explores belief and healing in Late Antiquity, through insight and terminology developed in modern placebo research. My introduction outlines the history of placebo research and its use in historical studies of medicine and healing. It has helped historians pose new questions to their sources and discuss them in light of modern medical research. Most studies analyse various descriptions or records of symptoms or diagnoses, but …
A New Testament Text on a Syriac Incantation Bowl
This article demonstrates the use of Eph. 6:10-17 on a Syriac incantation bowl ( ibc 3), thereby challenging the commonly held opinion that there are no direct uses of the New Testament among the Syriac bowls. We then situate the use of this biblical passage on ibc 3 within the context of biblical citation and reference in Mediterranean magic more generally. Finally, we briefly reflect on the significance of the usage of the Bible on ibc 3 for th…
