The tense-aspect system of the Indo-European verb
This paper attempts to explain the transformation of the aspect-based verbal system of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) into a mixed system where both aspect and tense relations are expressed.It is argued that aspect is the primary semantic category of the PIE verb and that tense distinctions began later in the history of the proto-language.The main opposition between the present stem and the aorist stem can be reconstructed for PIE on the basis of the …
