Decentering the Human in Higher Education
Rapid change in technology, ecological crisis and changing epistemological assumptions are also influencing higher education and pose a challenge to the dominance of human-based pedagogies. Conventional models of instruction and education have favoured human reasoning and agency, often excluding the expanding role of non-humans, including artificial intelligence and digital systems, along with environmental systems in educational processes. This …
Translating conversational implicatures in English movies and series into Arabic
This paper examines how flouts and violations of conversational maxims are represented in translation and how this influences the different types of translational equivalence. A number of scenes from audiovisual media where there is a gap between one character’s intended meaning and another’s reply were examined by comparing the employment of conversational maxims in the source and target text. Additionally, the relation between the employed tran…
The Impact of Function and Context on Translating Film Titles and their Occurrences in Subtitles
Film titles are often comprised of single words or short phrases, their length rarely exceeding a sentence. Despite this, translating titles for new audiences is a complex task. This study examines this complexity by comparing how the same phrases are translated from English into Arabic when used as film titles versus when they appear within the dialogue as subtitles. Films where the title was uttered during the film were selected. The subtitles …

Paratextual reframing of visual elements in Al Jazeera’s coverage of the 2022 conflict between Russia and Ukraine
Since it started in February 2022, the Russian-Ukrainian War has gained the interest of numerous news organizations. The reframing of visual elements of ten news items about the Russian-Ukrainian War is examined in this study. The Arabic versions are extracted from the Al Jazeera website, while the original articles were taken from The Atlantic and Foreign Affairs. Baker’s narrative theory is used in this paper (Baker, 2018). Comparing the visual…
Intrinsic managing and the English-Arabic translation of fictional registers
The translation process involves several changes made to the source text. Some of these changes, referred to as intrinsic managing , are necessary to overcome linguistic differences and create a cohesive, coherent, and natural text without altering the meaning and content. While intrinsic managing is often used for naturalization, this approach may lead to translation losses. For instance, in many fictional works, characters are given unique regi…
Al Jazeera’s Para-Textual Reframing of The Atlantic and Foreign Affairs Coverage of The 2022 Russian-Ukrainian War
The Russian-Ukrainian War, which began in February 2022, has recently become a trend and attracted the attention of different news agencies. This paper examines the paratextual components of ten news articles on the Russian-Ukrainian War. The source articles are extracted from The Atlantic and Foreign Affairs, while the Arabic translation is retrieved from Al Jazeera website. In this paper, the narrative theory is adopted (Baker, 2018) since it i…
Aspects of Visual Content Covered in the Audio Description of Arabic Series
People with visual impairment need a special form of audio-visual translation (AVT) to have access to multimedia products such as series and movies. Audio description (AD) is an AVT mode that describes what is happening in the images through words. It is a necessary accessibility tool that allows the blind and visually impaired to visualize scenes through spoken material. This study examines the types of information covered in the AD of the Jorda…
Jordanian University Instructors’ Practices and Perceptions of Online Testing in the Covid-19 Era
It is widely known that exceptional circumstances inevitably call for the use of matching procedures. As there has been a change in face-to-face teaching methods, there have also been parallel changes in student evaluation and assessment plans or strategies during the COVID-19 era. This study investigates how COVID-19 affected online testing in higher education institutions in Jordan. For this purpose, the researchers developed a five-construct L…
Establishing a Covid-19 lemmatized word list for journalists and ESP learners
The aim of this research is two-fold; first, to explore the most frequent COVID-19 inspired words in medical news reporting contexts, and second, to classify them into different categories. This paper adopts a corpus-based approach to build a lemmatized academic word list (AWL) inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic. Factiva was used to retrieve the pandemic-related articles published in News Rx from January 1 - October 31, 2020. A total number of 18,…
Recursion of Phonological Phrase
In the original model of Prosodic Hierarchy (Selkirk 1984, 1986; Nespor and Vogel 1986), the prosodic representation was partly autonomous from the syntactic structure, and prosodic recursion was not possible. Recently, it has been proposed in Match Theory (Selkirk 2011) that each prosodic unit has a corresponding syntactic constituent, and prosodic recursion exists, as proposed in some recent empirical studies prosodic recursion exists, as propo…
