  • Experiential Spillover in Public Views of Police and Courts

Open Access•Emma L Henderson, Emma Henderson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Courts•2026•References: 26

Personal experiences with public officials influence how those officials are perceived. We question whether these experiential effects extend to other officials. If people draw on what they know to make inferences about unfamiliar evaluative targets, then interactions with one actor may shape evaluations of other independent actors. Focusing on police and courts, analyses of data from two surveys reveal that personal interactions with public offi…

  • Design and ideology

Emma Henderson, Kirsty Duncanson•ARTICLE•Griffith Law Review•2018

In this article, we examine the convergence of design, ideology and practice in three contemporary Australian magistrates’ courts. Using the formative analytical work of Pat Carlen and Doreen McBarnet, we juxtapose the Neighbourhood Justice Centre in Melbourne against Magistrates’ Courts in Brisbane and Perth. Our findings demonstrate the continued centrality of the ‘ideology of triviality’ and the continued reality of the ‘theatre of the absurd’…

In this article, we argue that Article 10.3 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Article 26 of the Convention on t…

  • Meanings of ‘Sex’ and ‘Consent’

Anastasia Powell, Nicola Henry et al.•ARTICLE•Griffith Law Review•2013

Since the 1980s, laws regulating the meaning and interpretation of sexual consent have been substantially reformed across Australian and international jurisdictions. Of particular note in an Australian context are the significant changes to the definition of consent introduced in Victoria in 2006 and 2007, which were informed primarily by the Victorian Law Reform Commission review of legislative provisions relating to sexual offences. In this art…
