Effectiveness of a Digital Screening and Navigation Model in Addressing Unmet Social Needs among Parents and Caregivers in Priority Population Groups
Introduction: Children and families from priority populations (e.g. culturally and linguistically diverse and regional/rural communities) often experience significant psychosocial challenges and barriers to accessing health and social care. These inequities were further exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Integrating social care with health services has been proposed as an approach to improve service access and address unmet needs. Methods:…
Australian Young Mothers’ Experience of Mental Health and Wellbeing During Their Perinatal Journey
This study explored young Australian mothers’ (aged 16–24) perinatal mental health and wellbeing using Participatory Action Research. Co-design workshops with 80 young mothers revealed three themes: (1) The Emotional Tides of Young Motherhood , capturing dialectical experiences of joy alongside anxiety, judgement, and isolation; (2) Rising Strong , highlighting resilience in navigating stigma and hardships while pursuing growth; and (3) The Stren…
Home Visiting Interventions and Their Impact on Mental Health, Psychosocial, and Parenting Practice Outcomes of Vulnerable Caregivers
Past reviews have found home visiting interventions to be successful at improving caregiver outcomes. Though, no review has looked specifically at the effect of home visiting interventions on caregivers with high vulnerability and complex needs. This review aimed to examine and synthesis the literature on the impact of home visiting programs administered to caregivers with young children, high vulnerability and complex needs by professionals/para…
Affect in Infant-Directed Speech of Swedish-Speaking Mothers and Fathers to 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-Month-Old Infants
Infant-directed speech (IDS) is characterized by a range of register-typical characteristics. Many of those can be objectively measured, such as acoustic-prosodic and structural-linguistic modifications. Perceived vocal affect, however, is a socio-emotional IDS characteristic and is subjectively assessed. Vocal affect goes beyond acoustic-prosodic and structural-linguistic IDS features and includes a perceptive-subjective component in the listene…
Prospective associations between early childhood mental health concerns and formal diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders in adolescence
Our findings highlight the opportunity for early identification of transdiagnostic developmental and MH issues in the preschool period. Findings also emphasise the critical role of social determinants of health in the longitudinal trajectory of MH and NDDs and highlight the need for implementing early supports for improving peer relations and behavioural support strategies. If coupled with wrap around social care, early support strategies can enh…
Co-Design of a Neurodevelopment Assessment Scale
Neurodevelopmental disorders are a heterogeneous group of conditions with overlapping symptomatology and fluctuating developmental trajectories that transcend current diagnostic categorisation. There is a need for validated screening instruments which dimensionally assess symptomatology from a holistic, transdiagnostic perspective. The primary aim is to co-design a Neurodevelopment Assessment Scale (NAS), a user-friendly transdiagnostic assessmen…

Enhancing Parent-Child Communication and Parental Self-Esteem With a Video-Feedback Intervention
Evidence on best practice for optimizing communication with prelingual deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children is lacking. This study examined the effect of a family-focused psychosocial video intervention program on parent-child communication in the context of childhood hearing loss. Fourteen hearing parents with a prelingual DHH child (Mage = 2 years 8 months) completed three sessions of video interaction guidance intervention. Families were as…
Age‐Specific Preferences for Infant‐Directed Affective Intent
This study examined the developmental course of infants' attentional preferences for 3 types of infant‐directed affective intent, which have been shown to be commonly used at particular ages in the first year of life. Specifically, Kitamura and Burnham (2003) found mothers' tone of voice in infant‐directed speech is most comforting between birth and 3 months, most approving at 6 months, and most directive at 9 months. Thus, the aim of this study …
