The Necropolis Workforce and the Chronology of the 21 st Dynasty
Lists of Necropolis workmen provide a valuable tool for testing chronological hypotheses about the 21 st Dynasty. Their arrangement, based on decreasing homology relative to the reign of Ramesses XI, shows that only Jansen-Winkeln’s hypothesis is compatible with the dates mentioned in these lists. This indicates that the dates recorded at Thebes before the reign of Amenemope refer to the Theban high priests of Amun rather than the Tanite kings. A…
The Sociology of Tomb and Temple Robbers of the Late 20 th Dynasty
This article is the second part of a study devoted to the sociology of tomb robberies at the end of the 20 th Dynasty and focuses on the organization of the thieves into bands. These structures were relatively stable. Leadership was inconstant and associated with unequal loot sharing and conflict. Households, including enslaved people, played an important role in band organization particularly among tomb robbers, while hierarchy and patronage wit…
Papyrus PM 49.11.1, Dating the Great Tomb Robberies, and the Chronology of the Late 20 th Dynasty
The Great Tomb Robbery papyri are a major source of information on the end of the 20 th Dynasty. Questioned in year 1 of the Renaissance thieves mention the taking of Medinet Habu by foreign troops, an attack of Hardai in Middle Egypt by the Viceroy of Kush Panehsi, and a temporary destitution of the High Priest of Amun (HPA), that are unfortunately not dated. The way forward to resolve this uncertainty is to date the thefts themselves since they…
The Sociology of the Tomb and Temple Robbers of the Late 20 th Dynasty
Tomb and temple robberies were an endemic concern throughout ancient Egyptian history. With the exception of the thefts recorded in the so-called Great Tomb Robbery Papyri of the 20 th Dynasty, we have almost no direct information on those who committed them. These texts provide important details on the sociology of robbers that, thus far, has not been fully explored. For this article, a database containing the almost 400 individuals involved in …
The Typology of Settlements in Ramesside Middle Egypt. An Analysis of the Wilbour Papyrus
A statistical analysis of text A of the Wilbour Papyrus shows that the pattern of landholdings surrounding localities well reflects the population inhabiting settlements and allows their categorization without preconceived idea. The resulting typology fits only in part with classifications relying on administrative considerations, the central place theory or archeological criteria. Urban features are not limited to regional capitals. Main and sec…
Ramsès XI, le premier prophète d’Amon et l’ascension de Piankh à Thèbes pendant l’Aire de la Renaissance
An analysis of P. Geneva D191, P. BM EA 75019+10302, P. Penn 49.11, and P. Turin 2097+2105 leads to a new interpretation on the political events at Thebes during the Renaissance Era. Ramesses XI played a major role in the restoration of order with the help of Libyan troops. He decreed the Renaissance Era with the will of restoring control in the South. Nesamun, at the death of his brother Amenhotep, was compelled to return to his former position …
The Lists of Necropolis Workmen in Theban Graffiti and Ostraca of the 21 st Dynasty
Lists of workmen of the 21 st dynasty mentioned on ostraca of the Valley of the Kings and graffiti of the Theban Necropolis have not been fully studied. We analyzed 113 workmen, scribes and foremen of the Tomb named in these documents. A comparison of the composition of the crew between lists of the 21st dynasty and lists of the reign of Ramesses XI allowed their chronological ordering. A model of the progressive renewal of individuals with time …
Modelling the Nile Agricultural Floodplain in Eleventh and Tenth Century B.C. Middle Egypt
Landholding and Agriculture in Late Ramesside Theban Documents
Agriculture and land management are recurring topics in the Late Ramesside Letters. Eight of them completed with P Turin Cat 2084 and P Berlin 8523 illustrate the agricultural methods used for farming cereals, fruits and vegetables in the late New Kingdom. They show that although necessitating extra work, artificial irrigation was frequent on small parcels located on ı͗db , nḫb or Ꜥ m Ꜥ m types of land. The two traditional categories of landholdi…
The Delay of the Grain Ration and its Social Consequences at Deir El-Medîna in the Twentieth Dynasty
Delay in the distribution of grain rations regularly occurred at Deir el-Medîna during the Twentieth Dynasty. In order to analyse the cause and social consequence of such delay, a statistical analysis of documents recording grain deliveries is presented, using both the delay and the absence of grain distribution, through an index specifically built for this purpose. Despite a complex circuit of cereals, organised to maintain an even grain supply,…
