Signum sagacis Aegypti
There are various suggestions for the hieroglyphic puzzle in Synesios' De providentia offering different, sometimes strongly divergent solutions. In his article “Osiris in Konstantinopel oder: Synesios' Ägyptische Erzählungen ”, the historian René Pfeilschifter recently analysed this passage in more detail, asking the question: “Does Synesios mean a hieroglyph that has actually been observed when he mentions the sceptres of Egypt, the claws of th…
Hermeneuma hieroglyphicorum
The present paper attempts to reveal the sources of a drawing by Giovanni Antonio Dosio (1533–1611) showing an obelisk inscribed with pseudo-hieroglyphs in the context of the classical authorities Diodorus Siculus, Strabo, Tacitus and Pliny the Elder. Baines offered a new translation and interpretation of the autobiographical inscription of Emhab (Cairo JE 49566), which is among the most problematic and controversial of ancient Egyptian texts. Against earlier interpretations, it is here suggested that Emhab describes his victorious life and death struggle against a man called Tmjrhtbt, a follower of the Hyksos king Apophis. The crucial word ȝw is to be translated–especiall…

Ein Käfig für einen Gefangenen in einem Ritual zur Vernichtung von Feinden
In JEA 71 (1985), M. Lehner and P. Lacovara sought to explain the ‘enigmatic wooden object’ found on the south side of Cheops' pyramid in 1960 as a frame for the transport of a tomb statue. It is here suggested that the object is actually a cage for a prisoner, which was used in a ritual for the destruction of the enemy. In support of this are cited a relief block from Karnak depicting just such a cage, and the Ritual for the Destruction of the E…
