Catholic Reformation and radical heterodoxy in Central-East Europe
It is well known that, alongside Lutheranism and Calvinism, other, even more radical forms of Protestantism emerged in the 16th century, attacking fundamental Christian beliefs such as the dogma of the Trinity. However, neither Catholic, nor Protestant states welcomed heterodox views, so their proponents were forced to flee to the East, where they were permitted to build their own churches in Poland and Transylvania. In the western parts of the c…
Source data for municipium Aelium Mogionibus (Környe, Komárom-Esztergom County, Hungary)
Archaeological excavations and inscriptions discovered on site point towards the existence of an Early Imperial Period urban settlement under the area of the present-day village Környe (Komárom-Esztergom County), established in the civitas Azaliorum region, most probably on the territory of the Mogiones tribe. On some of the inscriptions possibly related to the name of the Early Imperial Era settlement, unearthed on site and in the immediate neig…
Painted dedication to Genius and a relief depicting aquila from a sanctuary in Sopianae
In the locality of Sopianae, Pannonia Inferior, at the east corner of the settlement, there was a presumably customs station built at the end of the 2nd century which existed till 258–260 AD. From one of the rooms of the building excavated on Kossuth Square, Pécs, a fresco depicting a Genius , an inscription belonging to it, two pedestals – probably bases for statues – and a statue of an eagle came to light. Based on the assemblage the room may h…
The Two Parts of the “Mithraic Universe” by Right of the External and Internal Orientation of the Cult Image
The external orientation of the Mithraic sanctuaries shows a great variety and heterogeneity. The internal orientation of the sanctuaries suggested by the cult image, however, shows a great homogenity and uniformity. The internal structure is organised on the possible axial line drawn from the entrance to the cult image, and continues beyond that. We can establish that the interior of a mithraeum is oriented along the ‘North-South – East-West’ fr…
New sources of antitrinitarian philosophy
The article presents and describes a manuscript volume which contains some unknown speeches of the famous antitrinitarian thinker, Ernst Soner. Beside the data of the book and the short description of the speeches, the first one is discussed in detail, which is about libertas philosophandi , and emphasizes the importance of criticism and detachment, prefiguring rational thinking. The work is a new proof for the thesis that the rediscovered ancien…
A Mithraeumok tájolásának kérdéséhez
The aftermath of Christian persecutions
The purpose of this paper is to uncover similarities and differences between the works of the famous 3rd-century Carthaginian bishop written in adverse of his lapsed and heretic “colleagues”. The former ones are primarily the object of Letters 65 and 67, while the latter ones appear in the De Ecclesiae Unitate and in Letters 69–75. Their comparative analysis is motivated by the fact that in both cases the author’s purpose is to prove that these e…
Domborműves Ólomtábla Pannoniából
Ismeretlen magyarországi, pannoniai lelőhelyről származó római kori ólomtábla került a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeumba.
L. F. Marsigli a daciai metropolis, colonia Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa térképét is elkészítette.
In the year 213 A.D., after defeating the Germans (Alamanns), Caracalla headed for the East by the end of September-beginning of October. According to recent epigraphical evidence, by December of the same year the Emperor was already staying in Nicomedia (17. Dec. 213). The geographical name Raetia mentioned in the itinerary of the Historia Augusta (v. Ant. Caracalla V. 4), deranging the correct order of events could be Ratiaria in the original t…
