  • An Administrative Centre on the Eastern Frontier of the Neo-Assyrian Empire

Open Access•Gábor Kalla, Tamás Dezső et al.•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2024

During the last three excavation seasons, the ELTE Archaeological Mission to Iraqi Kurdistan focused on the Neo-Assyrian period. On the top plateau of the tell settlement, we uncovered parts of the citadel’s fortification and, at a depth of several metres, two monumental buildings which, in our view, were palaces. Research was carried out on the northern slope of the tell in two residential buildings belonging to officials’ households. These stru…

Open Access•Gábor Kalla, Tamás Dezső et al.•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2024

Following our paper published in the spring issue of Hungarian Archeology 2024, we continue to present the results of our 2021–2023 fieldwork at the Grd-i Tle tell site (Kalla et al. 2024). The previous article focused on remains from the Neo-Assyrian period (9th–7th centuries BC). Here, we summarize our results on the Hellenistic-Parthian and Islamic periods, during which the tell site reached its present state

  • Újabb kutatások Grd-i Tle lelőhelyén (2021–2023)

Open Access•Gábor Kalla, Tamás Dezső et al.•ARTICLE•Magyar Régészet•2024

Ez a cikk folytatása a Magyar Régészet 2024. évfolyam tavaszi számában megjelent tanulmányunknak, amelyben a Grd-i Tle lelőhelyén folytatott terepmunkánk 2021–2023 közötti időszakának eredményeit foglaltuk össze (Kalla et al. 2024).

Újabb kutatások Grd-i Tle lelőhelyén (2021–2023)

Open Access•Gábor Kalla, Tamás Dezső et al.•ARTICLE•Magyar Régészet•2024

Grd-i Tle tell lelőhelyének feltárása során az utolsó három ásatási évadban (2021–2023) az ELTE Kurdisztáni Régészeti Expedíciója elsősorban az újasszír időszak emlékeinek kutatására összpontosított. A munka során a felső teraszon előkerültek a citadella erődítésének maradványai, valamint két, egymás felett fekvő monumentális épületet, valószínűleg palota egyes részeit sikerült feltárni több méteres mélységben. A domb északi oldalán két lakóházba…

  • Assyrians and Greeks

Tamás Dezső, Ádám Vér•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2013

In this paper we present an analysis of the nature of early contacts between the Greeks and the ancient Near Eastern states (mainly the Neo-Assyrian Empire) in the 9th–7th centuries BC. In the first part, on the base of cuneiform sources we try to reconstruct the historical background of the western expansion of Assyria, in consequence of which the Levant came under the firm control of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, and the process of the eastern expan…

  • Šubria and the Assyrian Empire

    Tamás Dezső•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2006

Šubria, with other 1st millennium BC Hurrian states (Hubuškia, Ukku, Kumme, etc.) formed a zone of buffer states between the Assyrian Empire and its Northern Rival Urartu. Šubria defied the commands of Assyrian and Urartian kings for a long time, especially in the 8th and early 7th centuries BC. The reason behind might be that Šubria was probably an acknowledged refuge state with an ancient refuge sanctuary, which held back the two superpowers fr…

  • Assyrian Iron Helmets from Nimrud Now in the British Museum

    Tamás Dezső, John Curtis•ARTICLE•Iraq•1991

This paper is concerned with a pointed iron helmet with decorative bronze inlay and a collection of iron fragments, also with bronze inlay, from similar or related helmets. All are now in the British Museum. The complete helmet, reconstructed from fragments (BM 22496), is clearly of Assyrian type, and the bronze inlay forms, amongst other motifs, a central design showing the king with crown-prince and attendant framed by a bud-and-garland border.…
