The journeys of Orpheus
The figure of Orpheus has been and continues to be the subject of in-depth studies focusing mainly on the historical, religious (relative especially to Orphism), and then iconographic aspects (the representation of Orpheus and typical moments of mythical imagination that concern him). It may be interesting here to draw a precise map of places visited by Orpheus, alive but also once killed, through his prophetic head and lyre. This paper also aims…

Il Grande Ciclo della stella Sothis
In 139 AD, under the reign of Antoninus Pius, an astronomical event of great importance for Egypt took place: the Great Cycle of the star Sothis, identified with Sirius of the constellation of the Dog, in which the star touched the same point on the horizon reached by the Sun once every 1461 years: this moment began a new era, the Sothiac cycle. This millenary convergence, which marked a moment of great popular celebration, was an omen of prosper…
The Filatterio Capitolino, The Greek-Jewish foil preserved in The Musei Capitolini
This paper is focused on the context of an excavation where the Capitoline Philactery was found. It is a silver-inscribed foil, in the upper part we read a short Greek text, while in the lower one the text is written in Hebraic. The foil could protect from malaria. It was found in Rome in the Esquilino quarter in 1874 inside a Mithraeum, that took place in the 3th–4th century within an area of Imperial property. To the same place converged the cu…
Χαῖρε Ὀρφεῦ! Perception of a Mystery
The myth of Orpheus experienced a great popularity in ancient world, covering the path from a mythical legend to a complex and sophisticated mystic cult. There were many various features of Orpheus that characterized the Thracian singer, being the result of his different adventures: from the quest of the Argonauts and the pathetic story of love of Eurydice, to his journey to the underworld. The myth of Orpheus was highly represented in iconograph…
