  • It Makes My Heart Smile When I Hear Them Say, ‘Hi Grandpa, We’re Home!’”

    Open Access•Jessica Ullrich, Jason C Young et al.•ARTICLE•Genealogy•2025•References: 5

Before colonization, Indigenous child protection looked like an interdependent community. Indigenous knowledges and relational actions kept all within its fold safe and well. Colonial dispossession of land, degradation of subsistence rights, boarding schools, ongoing child removal, capitalism, and systems of oppression attempted to disconnect Indigenous peoples from their language, lands, ceremonial practices, stories, dances, songs, family, comm…

  • Stronger When We Are Together

Patricia Johnston, Shirley Tagalik et al.•ARTICLE•The American Review of Canadian…•2022

Drawing on research with Inuit mothers from Arviat, Nunavut, this article explores child welfare social services in Nunavut, Canada. Since its inception in the 1950s, the state’s model for child welfare has always been at odds with Nunavummiut life, culture, and beliefs. This article highlights how the design and execution of model of child welfare has provided the majority of decision-making power to Qallunaat (non-Inuit). Through an examination…

  • I” is for “Italian”

    Patricia A Johnston, Patricia Johnston•ARTICLE•American Art•2021

Italian “image peddlers” sold small plaster sculptural reproductions door to door in the United States during the nineteenth century. Representations of these street vendors illuminate the histories of the art reproductions market, emigration of the Italian Catholic artisans who produced and sold classical and Renaissance figurines, and the Protestant middle-class consumers who purchased them. Using print images from abecedaries (alphabet books) …

Through a discussion of meritocracy, this study highlights the problematic approach to child welfare used by the Government of Nunavut, particularly in their reliance on Qallunaat or nonInuit social …

  • The Contradiction of Helping

Patricia Johnston, Frank Tester•ARTICLE•Journal of Progressive Human…•2015•References: 18

Significant differences in privilege, material resources, and decision-making power exist between Inuit and Qallunaat (or non-Inuit) in Canada’s Nunavut Territory. Holding serious implications, the disproportionate advantages afforded Qallunaat require an examination of the relationship between social work and the State (as employer). The role of credentialism and professionalism in the maintenance of neocolonial relations reveals a professional …

When someone says, That reminds me of the Neil Simon movie where ... and continues to describe particular circumstance and dialogue, common experience is shared. A message is received. Speaker and listener have mutual understanding of situation. The scene has done its job; it has organized experience in such way to act as metaphor that links real experience to another kind of understanding. What is often forgotten, however, is that the scene from…
