  • Range Dynamics of Barren-Ground Caribou Implied by Historical Population Cycles and Logistic Growth

Open Access•Eric Bongelli, PHILIP D McLOUGHLIN et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2025

We examined logistic range dynamics of three cyclic subpopulations of migratory barren-ground caribou in northern Canada (Qamanirjuaq, Bathurst, and George River). We used time series census data from each subpopulation cycle to project numbers (Nt), calculate subpopulation annual finite rates of population increase (λt), and estimate the corresponding time series of range condition or carrying capacity (Kt) using an algebraically rearranged vers…

  • Apparent Collapse of the Peary Caribou ( Rangifer tarandus pearyi ) Population on Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut, Canada

Open Access•Conor D Mallory, Matthew Fredlund et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2020

In spring 2019, we conducted a comprehensive abundance and distribution survey for Peary caribou (Rangifer tarandus pearyi) and muskox (Ovibos moschatus) on Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut, Canada. Although much of Axel Heiberg Island is rugged and extensively glaciated, areas east of the Princess Margaret mountain range have high productivity given the latitude and have supported relatively large numbers of Peary caribou and muskoxen. This region o…

  • Muskox status, recent variation, and uncertain future

Open Access•Christine Cuyler, Janice Rowell et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 55

Muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) are an integral component of Arctic biodiversity. Given low genetic diversity, their ability to respond to future and rapid Arctic change is unknown, although paleontological history demonstrates adaptability within limits. We discuss status and limitations of current monitoring, and summarize circumpolar status and recent variations, delineating all 55 endemic or translocated populations. Acknowledging uncertainties, …
