  • Science on ecosystems and people to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

    Open Access•Matthias Schröter, Marta Berbés‐Blázquez et al.•ARTICLE•Ecosystems and People•2023

In December 2022, members of the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the new Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) (https://www.cbd.int/gbf/targets/) to guide international biodiversity conservation efforts until 2030 in order to be able to live ‘in harmony with nature’ by 2050. This framework addresses the implementation gap left after the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, which were the previous global instrument for mainstreami…

  • An assessment of silvopastoral systems condition and their capacity to generate ecosystem services in the Colombian Amazon

Open Access•Faver Álvarez, Fáver Álvarez Carrillo et al.•ARTICLE•Ecosystems and People•2023

Livestock production in the Colombian Amazonia is typically dual-purpose (meat and milk) based on silvopastoral systems. We aimed to assess how the ecological condition of these systems correspond to the ecosystem services they generate based on an assessment of farmers’ knowledge of the tree species. We evaluated 159 paddocks. We recorded 143 tree species from 37 families, with 22 species being most common (relative occurrence frequency = 57%). …

  • Sustainable Development Goals and risks: The Yin and the Yang of the paths towards sustainability

    Open Access•Nicolas Eckert, Graciela M Rusch et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 62

The United Nations 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) define a path towards a sustainable future, but given that uncertainty characterises the outcomes of any SDG-related actions, risks in the implementation of the Agenda need to be addressed. At the same time, most risk assessments are narrowed to sectoral approaches and do not refer to SDGs. Here, on the basis of a literature review and workshops, it is analysed how SDGs and r…

  • Priority maps for pollinator habitat enhancement schemes in semi-natural grasslands

    Open Access•Markus A K Sydenham, Katrine Eldegard et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2022

Conserving semi-natural grasslands, a threatened habitat type in European landscapes, is increasingly recognized as a measure to conserve pollinators. Our aim was to test if (a) prediction maps of solitary bee species richness could be used to rank semi-natural grasslands in terms of their potential for supporting wild bees, and (b) if such predictions extend current assessment criteria that determine which grasslands are eligible for being liste…

  • High resolution prediction maps of solitary bee diversity can guide conservation measures

    Open Access•Markus A K Sydenham, Zander S Venter et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2022

Wild bees are key ecosystem components making their decline a cause for concern. An effective measure to increase wild bee diversity is to enhance plant diversity. However, the effect on bee diversity of augmenting plant diversity depends on site-specific environmental conditions. We aimed to make spatial predictions of where: (a) environmental conditions maximize bee diversity, so that such areas can be prioritized for augmenting plant diversity…

  • A joint climate and nature cure: A transformative change perspective

    Open Access•Graciela M Rusch, Jesamine Bartlett et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 32

Climate change has considerably dominated science-policy dialogue, public debate, and subsequently environmental policies since the three “Rio Conventions” were born. This has led to practically independent courses of action of climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation actions, neglecting potential conflicts among outcomes and with missed opportunities for synergistic measures. Transformative governance principles have been proposed…

  • Transformative governance of biodiversity: Insights for sustainable development

    Open Access•I J Visseren-Hamakers, Jona Razzaque et al.•ARTICLE•Current Opinion in Environmental…•2021•Cited by: 29•References: 18

While there is much debate on transformative change among academics and policymakers, the discussion on how to govern such change is still in its infancy. This article argues that transformative governance is needed to enable the transformative change necessary for achieving global sustainability goals. Based on a literature review, the article unpacks this concept of transformative governance. It is: integrative, to ensure local solutions also h…

  • Environmental justice and outdoor recreation opportunities: A spatially explicit assessment in Oslo metropolitan area, Norway

    Open Access•Marta Suárez, David N Barton et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2020•Cited by: 10•References: 7

Urban and peri-urban green space provides multiple recreation opportunities with important benefits for physical and psychological well-being, but access to these benefits is often unequally distributed. Various methodologies to assess outdoor recreation opportunities exist, but they rarely take into consideration dimensions of environmental justice. The aim of this paper is to map and assess nature-based outdoor recreation opportunities with a f…

  • The science, policy and practice of nature-based solutions: An interdisciplinary perspective

Open Access•Carsten Neßhöver, Timo Assmuth et al.•ARTICLE•The Science of The Total…•2017

In this paper, we reflect on the implications for science, policy and practice of the recently introduced concept of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), with a focus on the European context. First, we analyse NBS in relation to similar concepts, and reflect on its relationship to sustainability as an overarching framework. From this, we derive a set of questions to be addressed and propose a general framework for how these might be addressed in NBS pro…

  • Policyscape—A Spatially Explicit Evaluation of Voluntary Conservation in a Policy Mix for Biodiversity Conservation in Norway

    David N Barton, Stefan Blumentrath et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 3

We use spatially explicit indicators for biodiversity conservation status and opportunity costs of conservation to evaluate the role of voluntary forest conservation in a mix of policy instruments distributed across a landscape. We define a spatially explicit evaluation of a policy mix as a “policyscape analysis.” A policyscape analysis includes a comparison of (1) actual spatial overlap of instruments, (2) “functional overlap” of instruments in …
