Mechanisms to exclude local people from forests: Shifting power relations in forest transitions
Forest transitions may significantly contribute to climate change mitigation but also change forest use, affecting the local people benefiting from forests. We analyze forest transitions as contested processes that simplify multifunctional landscapes and alter local livelihoods. Drawing on the Theory of Access, we develop a conceptual framework to investigate practices of multifunctional forest use and the mechanisms that exclude local forest use…
Stocks, flows, services and practices: Nexus approaches to sustainable social metabolism
Hidden emissions of forest transitions: A socio-ecological reading of forest change
Achieving a global forest transition, that is, a shift from net deforestation to reforestation, is essential for climate change mitigation. However, both land-based climate change mitigation policy and research on forest transitions neglect key processes that relieve pressure from forests, but cause emissions elsewhere (‘hidden emissions’). Here, we identify three major causes of hidden emissions of forest transitions, that is, emissions from agr…

Long Term Socio-Ecological Research: Studies in Society-Nature Interactions Across Spatial and Temporal Scales
The authors in this volume make a case for LTSER’s potential in providing insights, knowledge and experience necessary for a sustainability transition. This expertly edited selection of contributions from Europe and North America reviews the development of LTSER since its inception and assesses its current state, which has evolved to recognize the value of formulating solutions to the host of ecological threats we face. Through many case studies,…
Two steps back, one step forward: Reconstructing the dynamic Danube riverscape under human influence in Vienna
As part of an interdisciplinary project on the environmental history of the Viennese Danube, the past river landscape was reconstructed. This article describes the different types of historical sources used for the GIS-based reconstruction, the underlying methodological approach and its limitations regarding reliability and information value. The reconstruction was based on three cornerstones: (1) the available historical sources; (2) knowledge a…
Looking at half a millennium of co-existence: The Danube in Vienna as a socio-natural site
Which insights can be gained from a long-term study for river management today? Vienna’s layout and city budget are still influenced by interventions undertaken in the 19th century or even earlier. This introduction to a thematic issue on the Viennese Danube’s environmental history from 1500 to 1890 offers a short overview of important events in Vienna’s and the Danube’s intertwined histories as well as an overview of the study’s conceptual basis…
Changes in water and land: The reconstructed Viennese riverscape from 1500 to the present
Medieval Vienna was situated at the main arm of the swiftly flowing alpine Danube. From the fourteenth century onwards, the river gradually moved away from the city. This marked the beginning of 500 years of human intervention to prevent further displacement of the river and to preserve the waterway as a vital supply line. Archival research and the GIS-based reconstruction of the past riverscape allow a new view about the co-evolution of the city…

Assessing the Societal Benefits of Applied Research and Expert Consulting in Water Science and Technology
Applied research and expert consulting are conducted at research institu tions and universities that are supported by public investment. This is often justified on the basis of anticipated societal benefits. Thus it is incumbent on the institu tions that conduct these activities to develop a sound basis for the assess ment of their bene fits and to be able to communicate these to the public

Protective shelters at the archaeological sites of Mallia (Crete) and Kalavasos-Tenta (Cyprus)
Three protective shelters, composed of glulam (laminated wooden beam) structures forming arches covered by polycarbonate sheets, were built in 1990–1 at the Minoan Bronze Age site of Mallia in Crete, within the context of development and presentation of the site, including conservation and the building of facilities (tourist pavilion and parking area). In Cyprus, at Kalavasos-Tenta, since 1995 the Neolithic settlement has been covered by a new sh…
