  • Defining and operationalizing ‘nature-positive’ — a question of power

Open Access•Marie Stenseke, Johanna Alkan Olsson et al.•ARTICLE•Current Opinion in Environmental…•2025•References: 5

This paper examines how the concept ‘nature-positive’ as a means to enhance biodiversity is defined and used, viewed through the lens of power. Building on a three-dimensional conceptualization of power, we elaborate on i) how ‘nature-positive’ enters and remains on business and policy agendas, ii) different interpretations from both ecological and business perspectives, and iii) the governance of its implementation. Our findings reveal divergent…

  • Principles for transformative ocean governance

    Open Access•Amanda T Lombard, Jai Kumar Clifford-Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 8

With a focus on oceans, we collaborated across ecological, social and legal disciplines to respond to the United Nations call for transformation in the ‘2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’. We developed a set of 13 principles that strategically and critically connect transformative ocean research to transformative ocean governance (complementing the UN Decade for Ocean Science). We used a rigorous, iterative and transparent consensus-buildin…

  • Transporting ideas between marine and social sciences

Open Access•Lucy M Turner, Ramachandra Bhatta et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2017

The oceans comprise 70% of the surface area of our planet, contain some of the world’s richest natural resources and are one of the most significant drivers of global climate patterns. As the marine environment continues to increase in importance as both an essential resource reservoir and facilitator of global change, it is apparent that to find long-term sustainable solutions for our use of the sea and its resources and thus to engage in a sust…

  • An Actor Game on Implementation of Environmental Quality Standards for Nitrogen in a Swedish Agricultural Catchment

Hans Bertil Wittgren, Reinhold Castensson et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2005•References: 21

Despite political efforts, diffuse pollution from agriculture continues to be the single largest source of nitrogen (N) emissions into the aquatic environment in many countries and regions. This fact, and the recent enactment of a new Swedish environmental code, led to the design of a study targeted at the evaluation of new N pollution abatement strategies. An actor game was chosen as the key component of the study, with a focus on four major goa…

  • Adaptive Coastal Planning and the European Union's Water Framework Directive

    Lena Gipperth, Ragnar Elmgren•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2005•References: 4

The implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive and the achievement of its water quality objectives will to a large degree depend on scientific knowledge about the sources and status of water resources and the effects of mitigative measures. Coastal waters will be of central interest, since the management of whole river basins may be affected if coastal water status is not satisfactory. The Water Directive's general directions on what info…
